I'm writing about the differences between university and apprenticeships and it's ridiculous how apprenticeships are often viewed as a secondary choice or an alternative route. Both universities and apprenticeships offer paths to higher education. The key difference? While universities involve lecture halls, apprenticeships provide hands-on learning experiences on the job. Our data shows that workplace learners from more deprived backgrounds are less likely to get selected for an apprenticeship than their more privileged peers. However, disadvantaged learners who surpass all obstacles benefit most from an apprenticeship. Studies show that those from lower socio-economic backgrounds experience significant earnings growth after completing apprenticeships, with post-completion earnings surpassing those of their more privileged counterparts. From us, if apprentices are to be the key to bridging skills gaps in vital industries, those enticing them will need the finances to match the rhetoric. However, outside of salary, work to put apprenticeships on a level footing with degrees, improved apprenticeship delivery, and diverse apprenticeship options up to Level 7 are having a positive impact on society's view of apprenticeships.
