What do Britons think about apprenticeships? ✅ Positive about prospects ❓ Sceptical about salaries Those are the findings of the Ipsos National Apprentice Week survey on apprenticeships. From us, if apprentices are to be the key to bridging skills gaps in vital industries, those enticing them will need the finances to match the rhetoric. However, outside of salary, work to put apprenticeships on a level footing with degrees, improved apprenticeship delivery, and diverse apprenticeship options up to Level 7 are having a positive impact on society's view of apprenticeships. What do you think? Increasing access... or cutting corners? The debate around the new system of 'Degree Apprenticeships' continues with the announcement of Teacher Degree Apprenticeships at FE Week Annual Apprenticeship Conference earlier this year. The hopes of a sector are resting on apprenticeships, but what kind of market will apprentices be facing - and will this apprenticeship prepare them? It’s truly disappointing to hear the Education Secretary say last week, “Don’t worry if you didn’t do well in your A-levels, there’s always apprenticeships.” I genuinely thought we had moved past the notion of apprenticeships as a back up option, something for “people who couldn't do university.” Apprenticeships are not a fallback—they are an effective, powerful choice that can lead to outstanding careers and qualifications, even up to a master's level, all with zero fees and real-world experience. It's time we elevate the conversation around apprenticeships and recognize them for the valuable pathways they are. #Apprenticeships #Education #Careers #SkillsDevelopment #rics

50% of people go to University but only 33% of jobs are of a 'professional' standard and require a degree (ONS data). University is therefore oversubscribed relative to the job opportunities. On the ground.. we all know university graduates working in coffee shops etc who are 50k+ in debt, and my heart goes out to them. In my industry, doing an Engineering or Quantity Surveying degree is great (mainly due to these being ‘practical’ degrees), but even then, if you prefer to work with your hands, then I think you will go further than myself or many other graduates if you do something ‘hands on’ and do it with passion. Here's what you can do from 16.... Do an apprenticeship Learn to build things Build a wall Pour concrete Learn plumbing Learn how to wire electrics Learn trades, learn skills Even in the practical trades, society will try and guide you into 1 niche, but if you are ambitious, learn multiple trades with a bigger vision of setting up a construction business that builds projects. You will become a respected person with huge value to society, and you will be rewarded for it. #QS #Engineer #Practical #Apprenticeships #University #Construction #plumbing #electrician #Builder

Absolutely agree with this. I think Apprenticeships are hugely the way forward - and studying alongside working reaps huge benefits. Not only is confidence built, but younger people are introduced to working for a wage and being financially responsible. I have personally seen amazing success stories of young people who struggled in schools, who weren’t necessarily ‘academic’ but had brilliant common sense - they’ve gone onto these schemes, and now have incredible careers. #apprenticeships #learningonthejob

Our data shows that workplace learners from more deprived backgrounds are less likely to get selected for an apprenticeship than their more privileged peers. However, disadvantaged learners who surpass all obstacles benefit most from an apprenticeship. Studies show that those from lower socio-economic backgrounds experience significant earnings growth after completing apprenticeships, with post-completion earnings surpassing those of their more privileged counterparts.
