The world of tech seems to be releasing new features every other day. As a business owner, it's hard to keep up with the latest features and run your business at the same time. Last month, Shopify hosted their Winter '24 editions announcing a whole bunch of new tech coming to the platform. We took a deep dive and summarised a few key standouts that we think will be a great edition to your online store this year. Take a read below

Lidmila Maršálková from chlupatepredplatne.cz wanted to manage mystery boxes on her Shopify store. Is it possible to add a product to an order without showing its original price? As a developer, I couldn’t say no to this request! With Shopify’s feature set and API surface expanding every quarter, it’s impossible to stay up to date with everything. I had to explore, and I knew starting with the Admin block extension was the right place. But that’s where the good news ends, and the compromises begin. I was hoping to use product bundles, but the feature wasn’t really built with mystery boxes in mind. It’s currently not possible to add a product bundle to an existing order. I also hoped I could hide the original price of a product when editing the order, but no luck there. Currently, we’re just directly adjusting inventory quantity—but that’s not a sustainable solution when working with fulfillment centers or inventory analytics tools. Still, I’m very happy with the Admin block extension. It allowed me to place a small component directly on the order detail page, so I could avoid writing an app from scratch. I even managed to skip having a backend by using the Admin API directly from the extension.

yes exactly, if there is a minor upgrade you can pick the code according to your need from the upgraded version. otherwise it will be just waste of time and money.

Reminder: when there's a new Shopify theme version, 99% of the time it's completely okay to skip upgrading. Most stores have a lot of custom code on their theme already. So the upgrade can't be applied automatically. Instead of the huge development effort to merge the custom code into the new version, do this: Go to the theme's page, and look at the "Release notes". If you do see a change that's necessary, then have your developer merge that change only. It's a lot more practical. A lot of people think that when adding custom code to the theme, everything will automatically sort itself out in the future. It's not like that, and it's a cost that comes with running a business based on software. #shopify #shopifyplus #ecommerce

We're just a couple of weeks away from upgrading from checkout.liquid to Checkout Extensibility for the Information, Shipping, and Payment pages. What does this mean for you? If you have customizations running on the Information, Shipping, or Payment pages of your checkout, you'll need to upgrade to the new Checkout Extensibility by August 13, 2024❗️ Our Head of Product, Tico van Beurden, was invited by Shopify to explain the checkout migration process we did for Vanilia, one of the 30 checkout migrations we’ve completed in the last two years. Here's another question we are asked a lot - do we work only with Shopify? The answer is no, but about 85% of our projects are on the #Shopify platform. Here's why: * First of all Shopify’s standardisation lets us execute projects much, much faster. * For non-Shopify platforms, the complexity often increases. That’s why projects outside of Shopify tend to cost more. It’s a simple reflection of the additional time and resources needed to achieve the same outcomes. * We talk a lot internally about our knowledge being an “inch wide, mile deep.” We focus intensely on a narrower set of platforms (like Shopify) so we can deliver real depth of expertise. * Standardisation across projects means we can also invest time and resources into challenges that might otherwise not be feasible. This includes a number of custom coded solutions, including faceted navigation, schema, breadcrumbs and other components. * Macaroni Software connects to Shopify through our custom app, allowing us implement and track work at scale. New to Shopify Flow: `console.log` for more efficient debugging of your code! Debugging can often be challenging, especially if you want to dig deeper into your Shopify store's code. But We have great news for you: Shopify Flow has expanded its functionality and now allows you to use `console.log` in the Run code action. This means that you can now use `console.log(“foo”, order)`, for example, to monitor values directly in the workflow log during execution - a real game changer for anyone taking their shop to the next level want! 👉 Why is this such a win? It's simple: You receive direct feedback in the log about what is happening in your code. This makes debugging much easier and helps you identify and fix sources of errors more quickly. By the way. The time to migrate to Shopify's new extensibility checkout has ended! 😱 Yes, tomorrow, August 13th, is the last day to have your checkout migrated to the new checkout extensibility. To remind you... why all this? Until today, any Shopify Plus subscriber has had the advantage of modifying the checkout code. Yes, indeed, that's how you have the code. And that's why many necessary but poorly implemented customizations for the checkout project arose over time. Now Shopify proposes Checkout Extensibility, which, as the name suggests, talks about "extending" the checkout functionality using an editor. You can simply drag and drop to configure an application or go through a more complex programming process using Functions. Shopify echoed the complexity of this migration and, to facilitate all merchants, released an application called Checkout Blocks. This application allows you to perform many of the most traditional settings in the checkout but with the new format. There is one more year before the next step, which involves stopping using scripts and more complex customizations in the Thank You Page and Order Page.
