It’s alarming to note that only 9% of individuals who take time off work due to menopause symptoms feel comfortable disclosing the real reason to their manager. This statistic underscores the urgent need for change in how menopause is addressed in the workplace. Incredible points, Midi Health. We’ve barely begun to scratch the surface of understanding how the workplace can support women in a way that drives retention, productivity, and recruitment…. Thinking about the impact on women in leadership, here’s my perspective. While the world is evolving toward a society that fully supports these conversations, the workplace we aspire to and the one we currently operate in are not the same. I applaud the push to bring this conversation into the workplace, and yet we need to recognize that stigma, ageism, and ingrained ideas about youth, beauty, and relevance run deep—sometimes so deep that we wrestle with them even within ourselves. This is what makes these conversations so challenging. As I work with leaders at this stage of life, I see firsthand the pressures we face in leadership—both in securing and maintaining high-level roles and in the persistent fear of appearing “too old.” Ageism is real for men and women alike, yet for women at this stage, it’s fast and furious. This is the catch-22 for leaders. We know our value and impact that comes from experience, yet that fear of being perceived as “too old” or less capable persists. Calling attention to our age isn’t an act of vulnerability — it is a downright risk. Another catch-22 lies in the very strong business case for implementing menopause-friendly policies — the very same case could unintentionally reinforce biases not to hire or promote women of this age. Menopause is not a protected condition, which means that, ironically, the fear may be justified after all. In my opinion, the problem we need to solve for is healthcare. This is the cornerstone. When we get this right, all of the other pieces will fall in to place. Compared to unraveling ageism and deep-seated societal conditioning, this almost feels straightforward. 🤔 To every business that takes menopause seriously as part of their leadership, recruitment, and wellness strategies: thank you. And a tip of the hat to Midi Health for leading the way in advocacy, education, and real healthcare solutions that support our prime career years to create that workplace—the one we are all aspiring to. #womeninleadership #leadership #menopauseawareness #menopause #perimenopause #iamachief #chief
