It’s no secret that the legal profession comes with a significant amount of pressure. We’re a group of highly motivated individuals, working with other highly motivated individuals, to achieve a bigger goal with a broader purpose. In law school, there’s pressure to get good grades and land a good job. As careers evolve, there’s pressure to build a book of business. And throughout our careers, there’s pressure to devote time – already a scarce commodity – to help others. It’s a lot. The weight of pressure can be heavy, leading to stress and burnout if not managed effectively. It can be draining and downright paralyzing at times. But pressure is a privilege. It's an opportunity to step outside of your comfort zone and tackle challenges that seem daunting or intimidating, and to ultimately make a meaningful difference. What’s the alternative? A life without pressure? Being comfortable with no expectations? Never pushing yourself? Never realizing what you are capable of? Next time you’re feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders, take a step back to see what opportunities might be at your feet. And you just might turn that lump of coal into a beautiful diamond.

Lawyers, if you're unhappy with your job, here's the best time to quit.... When you first think about it. I see endless posts by lawyers in online forums who are in various forms of grief over their career situation. You never think about quitting if you are in a job that is the right fit. Law school teaches us to rely on logic. This is great for things like writing briefs. But when it comes to big career moves, don't discount your intuitive judgment. Trust your gut. Go and find your thing. It exists.

“I’ve worked hard to succeed, yet I’m exhausted and wondering, Is this it?” Here's what most lawyers miss: That nagging emptiness isn't telling you to try harder at law. It's actually pointing you toward what you really want to do. I experienced that emptiness. I wasn’t practicing law at the time. I had changed careers from law to coaching, but it was so painful that I walked away from my business. My thought was, “How could I coach when I felt this way?” I kept searching for answers and eventually realized that the emptiness was the place to look. Merely changing careers won’t fill the hole either. You take the emptiness with you. I help lawyers uncover what they really want and build a clear path to it – to move from a career to your life’s work. Because you can create a life that reflects who you are, not just what’s expected of you. The first step? Getting curious about that dissatisfaction. It’s telling you something. Are you ready to listen – and serious about pursuing your life’s work? DM me and we’ll see if it’s right for you. Every minute counts. #lifeafterlaw #lifeswork #lawyeronthemove #

I thought I'd made the biggest mistake of my career. Let me explain. 🚮 10 years ago, I left everything behind. 💼 A well-paid job. ⚖️ A promising career. 🎓 Legal qualifications. I moved to the UK with hopes of something bigger, but all I had were unclear prospects and a constant fear that it wouldn’t work out. I had to start over. While my peers in Moscow were getting promoted, I was back in law school, starting from scratch. At first, it felt like a step backwards. But then I was offered a training contract at a top international law firm. It should have been a proud moment. It should have been the answer to all my doubts. But instead, it was the start of a deeper internal struggle. ⬇️ I lost my confidence. ⬇️ I lost my voice. ⬇️ I lost my sense of who I was. Why⁉️ I was scared I made a mistake. That it was all in vain. That it was taking too long. 💔 𝗔𝗻𝘅𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 and 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 became my constant companions. The next few years were a blur of rebuilding. It took time to rediscover my confidence, to rebuild my identity. And to finally say, with pride: I’m a lawyer. Twice over. Or, as I like to say now: 𝗜’𝗺 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝘄𝘆𝗲𝗿. Looking back, I realise two things: 1. It was hard. 2. It was worth it. Why? Because through it all, I learned that anything is possible if you put your heart and soul into it. To anyone considering a big change, taking a leap, know this: ❗It’s 𝗻𝗼𝘁 going to be easy. ❗It might 𝗻𝗼𝘁 even go according to plan. ❗But you’ll come out of it stronger, braver. ❗More 𝗬𝗢𝗨 than you ever imagined. 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻. 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘁. You’ll thank yourself later. Wouldn’t you agree?

Developing my unique style as a lawyer was a journey. Initially, I imitated others. Along the way I learned that what works for others didn't always work for me and conversely that I could get away with things that others could not. Recognizing my unique skills changed the game. Embracing my individuality maximized my potential. For lawyers seeking their style, consider personal strengths. Embrace who you are for a professional advantage.

Not every case will inspire you. But every case will shape you. When I imagined my legal career, I pictured passion fueling every case. Challenging injustices. Winning landmark rulings. Feeling inspired every single day. But reality felt different. Some cases were tedious. Some didn’t align with my interests. And some were downright exhausting. And while I struggled to connect with every case, I realized something more important… Loving every case isn’t the point—it’s about showing up, doing the work, and making an impact where it matters. Here are 3 strategies to stay motivated when the work isn’t ideal: 1. Focus on the Bigger Picture Every case contributes to something larger—justice, learning, or your career growth. Remind yourself of the *why* behind your work. 2. Set Personal Milestones Celebrate small wins, even in less exciting cases. Did you draft a flawless brief? Get a positive client review? Recognize your progress. 3. Find Purpose Beyond Passion Your role isn’t just about the cases that excite you—it’s about delivering results, earning trust, and leaving a legacy. You don’t need to love every case to build a meaningful career. You just need to show up and give your best, every single day. P.S. Which of these strategies resonates with you? #Lawpractice #FirstGenLawyers #Resilience #LegalJourney #Networking #Lawyer #Law #Advocate #Lawstudent

I've switched careers a couple of times. If you change careers, my advice is recognize that you need to learn a lot and then go deep into learning it, S. Scott Mason, about what you need for your new path. For example, I needed to raise capital for a company I founded so I read the entire state and federal legal code on securities. The result? I was able to intelligently work with our attorney to help him draft our Reg D offering documents. The business ran into trouble. Our investors wanted to sue us. Why didn't they? Because the documents they signed were too good. An investor, who was also an attorney, told me, “Tell your attorney he did a great job of drafting these documents.” I didn't tell him that I drafted all of the key parts that protected us. Later, my business partner said, “Thank you for keeping me out of jail.” The business failed, but creating documents correctly protected us. All because I went deep to learn what I needed to have success in my new venture. S. Scott Mason, thanks for the inspiration for this post. I'd love to learn how others thrived after a career change! #cashflowguru #startups #investing Cash is Clear™
