I've been thinking about the future a lot... I'm sure this is the way everyone feels but as a young law graduate (or a graduate of any course to be honest) there is just so much to think about😭 I've been thinking about law school a lot and how I'm actually going to get in, talk less of survive it💀 I've been thinking about what I want to do with my life after I beat the hell out of law school👀🌚 Do I want to be a Corporate lawyer working at some firm....and if so, what firm? Do I want to start a career in the academics? Will I aim for work in an International Finance or Human Rights Organisation? What about a Masters Degree? PhD? Or will I end up doing something completely different like becoming an artist or something? 😅 Having to think about all of this has been very anxiety inducing. It feels like it's so easy to make a wrong choice and become miserable. But I'm learning that people are always anxious about their future. Even the people I thought have everything figured out are still figuring things out themselves. Sure, some people have a better idea than others but no one really knows what tomorrow holds.😭 We are all just trying to figure this thing out. What I do know is that I have someone who directs my steps. That's why when the time to make those choices come, I pray I will make the right ones. 🤝🏾 Until then, my job is to be as valuable as I can. It’s no secret that the legal profession comes with a significant amount of pressure. We’re a group of highly motivated individuals, working with other highly motivated individuals, to achieve a bigger goal with a broader purpose. In law school, there’s pressure to get good grades and land a good job. As careers evolve, there’s pressure to build a book of business. And throughout our careers, there’s pressure to devote time – already a scarce commodity – to help others. It’s a lot. The weight of pressure can be heavy, leading to stress and burnout if not managed effectively. It can be draining and downright paralyzing at times. But pressure is a privilege. It's an opportunity to step outside of your comfort zone and tackle challenges that seem daunting or intimidating, and to ultimately make a meaningful difference. What’s the alternative? A life without pressure? Being comfortable with no expectations? Never pushing yourself? Never realizing what you are capable of? Next time you’re feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders, take a step back to see what opportunities might be at your feet. And you just might turn that lump of coal into a beautiful diamond.

When Opportunities Stumble Upon You. Have you ever been in a position where instead of searching for an opportunity, the opportunity finds you? How do you respond in such situations? A year ago I couldn't have imagined myself into my current position. I was a shy and inactive student, always the first to leave after lectures. I was however determined to grow, particularly in public speaking. I took deliberate steps, including becoming an intending delegate at the LCUMUN and joining the Litigation Team of my chamber. Although these were strategic moves, I still felt stuck in my quiet shell. But suddenly, my life took a dramatic turn when an opportunity stumbled upon me. It was the first day of class, and I was sitting pretty in class when I was unexpectedly thrust into the position of Assistant Class Representative. Initially I was hesitant and searched for ways to exit the post, but then I weighed the pros and cons, and made my peace with it. Today, I celebrate the remarkable amount of progress I have made since I took up that role. Unexpected opportunities like this presents itself in various ways. Including through your friends, acquaintances or even strangers. So what should you do when opportunities stumble upon you? ✓ You should consider. Don't decline without giving it a second thought! ✓ You should weigh the pros and cons. ✓ You should show up, and ✓ You should put in your best. I am Temitayo E. Don’t you think sometimes, the prestige of being a lawyer can overshadow your personal fulfilment? You love the law but my God, it’s tedious! It’s really starting to feel like a prison sentence. I almost quit law. I was quite unhappy with my workload at that time (it was not enough for me believe it or not🤣). Qualification seemed to be ages away. Any roles available sounded so boring and were definitely underpaying. I remember being so deflated, thinking I made a huge mistake choosing this career. I have been receiving invitations for commercial management positions. At the time it sounded quite interesting and very fast-paced. And I almost did it! Out of pure boredom I almost gave up on something I wanted since I was a kid. But I decided to stick it out. And boy am I glad I did! Quitting law would have been my biggest mistake. So, what this proves? 1. We need challenges to stay motivated. 2. Do not make drastic decisions at your lowest. Anyone had any similar career-changing moments?

⭐ 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗮𝘄𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀: 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 ⭐ Throwback to my law graduation - 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲. Navigating university during the challenges of COVID was something none of us could have anticipated, yet it forced us to adapt quickly and innovate. Although it was a time of great uncertainty, I wouldn't change that experience for anything. The obstacles only motivated me further, and I embraced every opportunity to grow. I participated in negotiation competitions, mooting, and debates, which culminated in an award that still reminds me of my perseverance. While my career path diverged from becoming a solicitor, the invaluable skills I developed during that time continue to serve me today. From problem-solving and strategic thinking to effective communication and negotiation, these skills shape my professional journey. Now, as a legal consultant, I have the unique opportunity to work alongside a diverse group of highly skilled lawyers and professionals. In this capacity, I get to leverage my own experience in the legal field, having witnessed first-hand how impactful the right guidance and opportunity can be for personal and professional growth. Most of us after attaining our degrees, the only thing we wish is to get a paying job in our career life (of which is good). 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱. Counsel Innocent Muramira comes forth with a lot to advice on this. Professionalism in the legal field encompasses various aspects, including ethical conduct, communication skills, and a commitment to excellence. 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭, 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠. On this part I had no idea and many of us are still struggling to maintain it. But in our field or any other field its crucial thing to work on. I graduated from a Tier-II law school in the bottom half of my class. Here’s what I did to have a fulfilling career despite not having the right *resume* 1 - I *tried* to not let conventional wisdom dictate my career path 2 - I worked for employers that hired for potential, not just record 3- I pursued non-traditional paths early, ie: legal tech, my own firm 4 - I said yes to projects that didn't have a straight lined path 5 - I built online networks that connected me to like minded people 6 - I constantly tried to keep learning, especially on tech 7 - I listened to myself and pursued my interests 8 - I took risks - yes, calculated - but still risks. As the legal economy continues to diversify and open up to more opportunity, I *truly* believe lawyers today can find career paths that are unique to them. This is how I did it. Were there times I doubted everything? Absolutely. But I'm so glad I did. I think you can too. We all can.
