National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO)'s midyear event saw 90%+ participation from US State CIOs which led to fantastic discussions. Here's what I took home: - The "I" in Chief Information Officer should be remarketed to "Indispensable" - credit to Theresa Payton, ex-CIO for the White House - We're still early in our data governance journeys and GenAI has put fuel on that fire - Citizens expect a single passage way through government services (e.g., DMV, Health, Retirement, etc.) irrespective how federated our functional structures may be - We should provide a training ground for AI and cyber skills despite the possibility that talent move on to the private sector - Get in front of the next generation early to promote careers in IT - BRMs are the key to collaboration with stakeholders and IT being perceived as an enabler I've included a few links in the comments below in for any interested in how we are supporting State CIOs in the above. In recognition of World Futures day- please see this article from the Partnership for Public Service on the value of foresight in government. It takes time to socialize and win hearts and minds to adopt this discipline. I have found that tying it to more widely understood strategic planning helps but often I frame foresight as why it benefits my audience at a fundamental level. At my agency it is usually obtaining resources and authorities to fight financial crime (current and emerging) and stay ahead of threats to protectees (kinetic and cyber). However, to all my futurist colleagues, especially in the interagency- meet your people where they are; demonstrate the indispensability of foresight and how it can help them shape the future THEY want to see based on THEIR equities. Stay curious, flexible, and persistent- when decisions are made that were foresight-informed at your organization, your hard work has paid off. Federal Foresight Community of Interest

Organizations are undergoing a strategic evolution in their approach to data - transitioning from data-driven to data-first. Both the terms are often used interchangeably but have distinct connotations. Guy Sheppard, Chief Commercial Officer, Aboitiz Data Innovation in conversation with Brian Pereira discusses the distinction between the two and what should be the playbook for transitioning from a data-driven to a data-first enterprise.
