Join us this Friday at Harvard University Graduate School of Design for Womxn in Design Week, featuring a Desert-Focused Conversation with Dr. Suhad Bishara as part of my Senior Loeb Scholar’s program: “Designing Within Conflict: Building for Peace.” As a landscape, the desert registers the enduring history of territorial boundaries, and it is a place where spatial policies are often used to facilitate the displacement of indigenous communities from their nomadic and semi-nomadic lifestyles in favor of state control. In the case of the Negev/Naqab desert in the south of Israel, nomadic and semi-nomadic routes as well as homes and grazing fields have been swiftly transformed into new towns, lone farms, nature reserves, monoculture pine forests, military bases, and industrial zones. Such displacement—often prompted by rezoning or other state-sanctioned repurposing of the landscape—has forcibly uprooted many Bedouins from their livelihoods and cultural heritage, compelling them to settle in densely populated localities. Others who have resisted relocation find themselves subjected to multidimensional violence that is justified by state policy on land use, including militarized raids and the destruction of Bedouin settlements. https://lnkd.in/dBhCY2bS

The decision to preserve and repurpose them reflects a growing understanding that heritage is a dynamic part of modern urban life. Bradford’s approach serves as a model for cities seeking to balance preservation with progress. This commitment signals a shift in how cities view historic buildings, recognising them as opportunities for sustainable and inclusive growth. With thoughtful planning and investment, heritage sites can become the foundation for a city’s economic resurgence. Our paper "Commoning the compact city: The role of old and new commons in urban development" is out! It builds on a case study of a #densification project in Holligen, a neighbourhood in #Bern. Over the last years, I've followed this development project with my own eyes, as housing was built and new green spaces were produced. In the paper, my co-authors and I use this case to: 🏡 show that densification is a #political process of reorganizing space; during this transformation, new rules for using and access urban land are defined. 🏬 show how a proactive role of the state (in our case, the city of Bern) can create the conditions for urban #commons to emerge. 🏨 argue that the distinction between 'old' and 'new' commons is crucial to understand the role of commons in urban development. 🏤 illustrate that commoning initiatives as part of urban transformation inevitably entail processes of social inclusion and exclusion. 🌱 argue that, because #commoning can change how densification is done, it can contribute to social #sustainability. When cityscapes undergo extreme makeovers, it's not just buildings that are affected – it's the soul of the community. Just as the phenomenon of demolishing historical heritage has gone global, so too have movements to preserve and care for our built environment. Since 2022, Argentinian architect Natalia Karbabian (@ilustroparanoolvidar on Instagram) has been raising awareness of this issue by illustrating demolished buildings. How right you are, that it's the #amateur (not only in us) we must seek to encourage! The #professionals are capable of #freeing themselves from these #distractions! The challenge of killing #HumanCreativity through profit-making #ConsumerDistractions will grow bigger with the more technological developments advance in society! Addressing this growing challenge, in my opinion, demands a professional approach to be adopted, if humanity ever thinks it's important to regain the #AmateurishCreativity it once had! Might be this will remain a longing of a dreamer of that "lost world" in which books once played an important role in the lives of the #creatives! POLITICAL DIMENSIONS OF ARCHITECTURE, URBANISM AND PLANNING In an era where online presence shapes politics, urbanism, and architecture, it is essential to understand how political forces influence the creation and implementation of urban projects. Despite urbanism's seemingly slow pace, the dynamic nature of political environments heavily impacts the continuity of construction and planning projects at local, national, and international levels. I am pleased to announce that currently I am preparing a lecture series for Faculty of Architecture at the Slovak University of Technology that delves into the interplay between political structures and urban planning, focusing on Slovakia and its position within European frameworks. Topics include legislative processes, governance structures, and the influence of EU funds on urban and strategic planning. Participants will gain insight into participatory planning, gender-sensitive urban design, and the financial mechanisms driving infrastructure projects. While the first round is dedicated for students, I am eager to offer this series to another client as well. The lecture series stems from my years of practical experience of urban projects and policy creation. The importance of this field is that its effects are directly manifested in the lives of #citizens. The recent course that I had the honor of attending was held in two sections by UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme). In the first part, it explains the new urban agenda in an easily accessible format. The first part of the course explains the main dimensions of the new urban agenda. The second part of this course discusses and explains the tools for implementing the new urban agenda. This course is intended for anyone interested in sustainable urbanism.
