The notion that we build buildings to last forever is in the past. That was one of the points I took from Michele De Lucchi's lecture "The Equation," which I attended recently. Both a narrative of his life as an architect and a tract on his current philosophical approach towards design, it was intriguing to hear his perspective on the changing influences and techniques in design over the decades and how he has embraced the shifting tides of design even today. #SingaporeDesignWeek #SDW24

It's absolutely lovely to see the quality of this amazing project being recognised. It's a brilliant piece of work, undertaken over a very long time by our old firm. (apologies to anyone who's already read 35 posts about this from Thomas) Hearing this news last night stirred up some emotions though. The submission for this award was the last I prepared at Hoskins Architects, before our 25 year old UK business was forced into liquidation, rendering me and around 30 others suddenly unemployed. The joy of the team being given the recognition they so justly deserve, and the pride in the great work our practice put out is tinged with sadness and frustration that it was the last that team would produce together. The commentary from the great and good on Rory McCoy's heart-felt and emotive post at the time echoes those feelings. Overarchingly, however, it's with real fondness that I remember working on marketing this project with my good friend and then colleague Thomas Hamilton. His frantic (otherwise occupied) brain spewing out nuggets for myself and Frances to weave into a coherent message, with the help of the other brilliant folk on the team (Jo and Daniel mainly at that point). It was a real privilege (and I remember recognising that at the time) to collate and edit the pack of information, including text, drawings and sketches, alongside photography from the brilliant Gillian Hayes, that tell the story of this design: - what was there before - why it didn't work and; - what we did to fix it. A simple formula for describing a less than simple renovation, that appears to have borne fruit. Well done to all involved in this mammoth endeavour - it was worth it!
The judges concluded that this highly ambitious project was an 'amazing achievement' and 'felt very appropriate for its civic status'. The winner of the Cultural Project award is Hoskins Architects for its revamped Scottish Galleries at the National. #AJArchitectureAwards

The built environment plays a key role in shaping societal development, necessitating a human-centered approach to our work as designers and architects. This blog by my colleagues Tory Hereford, Peter Pendergrass, and Manan Shah explores the intersection between restorative justice and design, and how we can contribute to more equitable communities and cities. https://ow.ly/QfSQ30sAXeq
