Vice President Government Affairs at Connections Health Solutions

It was an honor to serve on Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Technical Assistance Center with so many nationally acclaimed experts to establish Model Behavioral Health Crisis Services Definitions for states, National Association of Medicaid Directors #counties and tribal nations to transform their crisis systems. This influential group of leaders collaborated to shape the way crisis services will be provided to help every community build out a crisis continuum to save lives in a more standardized way. Special thanks to Dr. John Palmieri, Billina Shaw, MD, MPH, and Jill Mays for bringing us all together to play a vital role in advancing behavioral health crisis care across the nation. Written comments are due by December 5th. The imminent Standards and Definitions designates Connections Health Solutions model of care as "High-Intensity Behavioral Health Emergency Centers and Extended Stabilization Centers" distinguishing it from the others because we: • Receive all individuals for any individual defined behavioral health emergency. • Rapid drop-off with a “no wrong door” policy. • Provide dedicated entrance for law enforcement/EMS drop-offs. • Receive individuals on involuntary basis (based on jurisdiction guidelines). • Have the regulatory, staffing, and environmental capacity for seclusion and restraints if necessary and are locked units. • Have access to a psychiatric prescriber 24/7/365. • Onsite pharmacy or medication dispensing capabilities. • ASAM Level 3.7 Psychiatric. • LOCUS Level 6A – High-Intensity, Acute Medically Managed Residential Program. In addition to this document, three new publications are coming in an effort to identify and promote best practices for behavioral health crisis care and expand plan for long-term sustainability. They will also focus on creating a comprehensive system and addressing the lack of consistency in services. They are: 1. National Crisis Guidelines 2.0 2. Mobile Crisis Toolkit 4. CMS guidance on funding crisis services through #Medicaid and #CHIP.
