About us
The National Association of Medicaid Directors (NAMD) began as an independent, bipartisan, nonprofit, professional organization in 2011. Medicaid directors previously were represented as part of a larger umbrella group of agencies under the American Public Human Services Association, known as the National Association of State Medicaid Directors (NASMD). In 2010, state Medicaid directors voted unanimously to reincorporate as a separate group. Despite NAMD’s young history, Medicaid and state Medicaid directors have existed since 1965. NAMD represents members who oversee Medicaid in each of the 50 states, District of Columbia and U.S. territories. Medicaid directors are the senior leaders in states driving major innovations in health care while overseeing Medicaid, one of the nation’s most vital – and complex – health care safety net programs, which covers more than 72 million Americans. Medicaid directors work tirelessly to provide the best possible health care to vulnerable Americans while being responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars.

This means eliminating institutional bias in Medicaid, strengthening the direct care workforce, and better integrating health and social services. Last Thursday, NAMD participated in Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSAgov), HHS kick off meeting for NOSLO grantees with National Governors Association, Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, National Conference of State Legislatures, NASHP | National Academy for State Health Policy and NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF COUNTY & CITY HEALTH OFFICIALS NACCHO. It was incredible to be in the room with such a committed group of leaders who are working to align Medicaid and public health. There is a lot of synergy between our priorities, including: - Reducing disparities in maternal health outcomes and addressing maternity care deserts in rural and frontier regions - Building linkages between the health care system and carceral settings to support re-entry - Addressing the behavioral health needs of children and youth - Integrating behavioral health into primary care We're looking forward to the work ahead and deeply appreciate our new partnership with HRSA.

This National Rural Health Day, we’re sharing an episode from the Medicaid Leadership Exchange podcast that highlights how critical Medicaid is in rural and frontier communities. Medicaid leaders, Sarah Aker and Lee Grossman, sit down to discuss the unique challenges they face in North Dakota and Wyoming, including the complexities of providing members with high-quality, equitable care. The podcast is developed by CHCS in partnership with the National Association of Medicaid Directors through support from RWJF.
