Spring Blooms and Food Leadership 🌸🥬 As the first flowers start blooming and Mother Nature awakens from her winter slumber, I'm reminded of the important role leadership plays in the food industry. Just like a garden needs attentive gardeners to cultivate vibrant blooms, a thriving food system requires innovative and responsible leaders. True leaders in the food world nurture their organizations like a gardener tends to their plants. They provide the right environment, resources, and care to allow their teams to flourish and reach their full potential. They remove barriers and create opportunity for growth. At the same time, great food leaders look outward and upward, recognizing that their businesses exist within larger communities and ecosystems. The smartest ones operate in harmony with the environment through sustainable practices that minimize impact. They give back through food donations, community partnerships, and fighting for a more equitable food system. As you enjoy the colors and scents of this spring season, I encourage you to recognize the food leaders and organizations truly "blooming" in positive ways. Ever wondered how to uncover deeper purpose in your work? After Shiok Kitchen Catering ‘s recent Food Rescue, I had the privilege of picking the brains of Winnie Cheong and Karen Yip Taylor 叶珮瑩 the inspiring founders of The Red Collective and Summit Rescues – two thriving food rescue organizations they've built from the ground up. Their passion and impact are undeniable, and I really wanted to know what got them there. After much generous sharing on their part I believe I’ve distilled the secret sauce of their success down to a powerful blend of curiosity, courage, and compassion. Curiosity first sparked their exploration of Singapore's complex and erratic food rescue landscape. There is so much to learn about the food insecure communities in order to understand how to be of help to them. The “village chiefs” in each residential cluster are highly engaged with and consulted for food rescue to be successful. Courage fueled their drive to build their organizations, secure resources like a dedicated truck to deliver food products, fighting stereotypes and overcoming all manners of obstacles. Compassion guided them towards a deserving cause; to meet the needs of the have-nots, matching surplus to demand and training countless volunteers from all walks of life, not just on technical know-how but how to carry themselves with pride. I’d go so far as to say that I believe this winning combination of "3 C's" can unlock purpose and meaning for anyone, in any field. Are you living out your definition of "3 C's"? Reflecting on my recent ED Talk at EatDenver this spring, I'm reminded of how agriculture has shaped not just my career, but my worldview. It's been an instructor, mentor, and guide in how I think about my work and approach my relationships. There's a profound wisdom in the soil that informs every aspect of our lives. My work has centered around bridging the gap between our current state and our desired future—a future where we sustain life on this planet and foster interdependence and reciprocity throughout the global food supply chain. We are all agriculturalists in a sense, as our food choices and consumption habits influence agricultural practices, ecosystems, and food systems. Understanding our role in the ecosystem compels us to nurture it and cultivate resilience. In my ED Talk, I explore and weave these ideas, sharing insights cultivated during my time as a farmer—working in the soil, in the greenhouse, within the community, and often at the proverbial table. I'm grateful for the opportunities that have profoundly shaped my approach and continue to guide my work. Together, we can make a difference. Every season brings new lessons + possibilities. 2️⃣ Spice Catering Co. - We transform those farm-fresh ingredients into experiences that tell a story. We're usually catering a wedding or event or throwing our own event in nature somewhere. 3️⃣ Spice Field Kitchen - (Our non-profit) The classroom where it all comes full circle. Students learn firsthand about sustainable food practices + the joy of farm-to-table cooking. 4️⃣ Boom's Pizza - Making culinary excellence accessible to everyone while creating the best jobs in Cleveland. But here's what really makes it work: It's our team. When we hit a snag, we whiteboard it together. It's where problems meet their solutions. Every business decision comes down to one question: "How does this benefit our team?" Because when you take care of your team, they take care of everything else. That's how a collection of businesses becomes a family.
