AAPAM PARTICIPATES IN OECD HIGH LEVEL FORUM IN INCLUSIVE PUBLIC GOVERNANCE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN AFRICA AND MENA, 6-7 MAY 2024 IN CASERTA, ITALY The African Association for Public Administration and Management (AAPAM) participated in the OECD High Level Forum in Caserta, Italy 6-7 May 2024. Various disruptions such as the Covid 19 and diverse challenges have diminished the resilience of public institutions and eroded the trust of citizens in Government. To restore citizens' trust, governments must implement cohesive and inclusive measures to deliver prosperity, by taking innovative and creative approaches to public governance.  The OECD high-level forum aimed to address how governments can better promote resilient and inclusive public administration to deliver sustainable development and regain citizens’ trust. The event brought together representatives of African Governments, civil society organizations, academia, and regional development organizations. It also provided an opportunity for the OECD to present their ongoing global work.  Presentations made at the forum can be found on the AAPAM website.

🗣 LAUNCH - OECD - OCDE Report "Promoting Deliberative Democracy in the Basque Country, Spain: Learning from the Tolosa Citizen Assembly" building on two deliberative pilots led by Arantzazulab. This report takes stock of this experimentation and points to seven areas of opportunity for increasing the quality and impact of future deliberative processes. Last week, I led the OECD team on a fact-finding mission to Vienna, as part of an EU-funded, multi-country project focused on policy coherence for sustainable development. Our collaboration with Austria aims to strengthen its institutional mechanisms to enhance policy coherence in implementing the 2030 Agenda and its development cooperation. We engaged in insightful discussions with various stakeholders from the Austrian government, academia, and civil society institutions. Our primary goal is to enhance governance structures through a whole-of-government approach, ensuring Austria is well-equipped to tackle today's interconnected and complex challenges. This initiative is part of a 24-month project financed by the European Commission DG Reform, aligning with the call made during the UN Summit of the Future to equip governments and institutions for addressing global challenges effectively. I am excited to witness the positive impacts of this collaboration as we continue to develop innovative solutions for sustainable development. OECD Strengthening the Innovative Capacity of the Public Sector of Bulgaria [4 November 2024] https://lnkd.in/gp3P77d5 This assessment report explores the innovative capacity of Bulgaria’s public sector. It looks at how innovation can be better supported as a way to improve the State Administration’s responsiveness and, as a result, strengthen public trust in public institutions. It analyses the importance of public sector innovation in building trust in Bulgaria’s State Administration and reviews recent milestones. Using the OECD Innovative Capacity Framework, the report examines Bulgaria’s performance and provides policy recommendations across key governance areas.

A first reaction to the terms #accountability and #governance may be 😖 or 🥱 ... but it's critical to understanding everything else that you may be more interested in, whether that's infrastructure 🏗 , education 🏫 , health 🏥 etc. Why? Because everything we do, or work in, is part of a #system 🕸 , and each system is different and constantly changing. Unfortunately, there is often a tendency to take a #reductionist approach to issues, relying on specialists to identify the practices 'that should work', because they are in textbooks 📓 and reports, and may have tentatively worked elsewhere. Strategies, programs and the like may reference the term 'systems' without actually really doing anything about it. So let's have more #collectivelearning and #collectiveaction. 📣 Working in the #SolomonIslands, or just interested in how governance is not always how you may know it from 'back home'? Then..... ➡ Have a read of this really interesting report 🙌 (at least the Executive Summary 🎉), and ➡Have a think 🤔 of what it may mean for your work, and ➡Start a discussion with your colleagues, stakeholders, etc. and ask questions, start a discussion.... the more we understand systems, the more we can understand what may work, and what is unlikely to work, and more importantly, that change takes a long time ⏱ #internationaldevelopment #design #systemsthinking

  On #InternationalDayofDemocracy , we need to break new ground for democracy: In an era where social cohesion is vital for addressing climate change & digitalisation, the rise of polarisation and declining trust in many democracies pose significant challenges to meaningful dialogue and consensus. Geopolitical shifts further deepen these divides. To move forward, we must break new ground for democracy—better protect and better connect. This requires a dual approach: Looking Inward: Democracies must deepen and strengthen governance to meet citizens' heightened expectations. Trust is not automatic; it's earned through integrity, responsiveness, and a genuine respect for citizen voices. The OECD Trust Survey highlights the importance of demonstrating commitment to these values, ensuring that decisions are evidence-based and public services are reliable and responsive. Looking Outward: Democracies must continue to work with the global community. Strengthening democracy is not a solitary task. We must collaborate across borders, cultures, and languages to enhance our systems' resilience for the 21st century. This includes protecting the integrity of information, combating corruption, upholding human rights, and reinforcing the rule of law.
