From Chaos to Clarity: How to Define Your UX Research Question? 🎯✨
Defining your research question can feel like navigating a storm, especially with too many questions, ideas, requests, opportunities, etc. 🌪️
I’m excited to share a personal framework that I’ve created that guided me through these challenges, paving the way to crafting research questions that lead to successful research studies.

1. Think About The Problem 🤔
I begin by diving deep into the problem, exploring all angles - user, business, technology, market, data, and more.
Questions I consider asking are:
👉 What aspects of this problem are still unclear to us?
👉 Who are the users impacted, and why is this an issue for them?
👉 How does this problem affect our business goals?
👉 Is there any data or analytics that shed light on this issue?
2. Brainstorm Questions 💡
At this point, I have a good understanding of the problem, and I have some questions in mind that I need my research to answer. With this solid understanding, I let my curiosity guide me, asking:
👉 What do we need the research to uncover?
👉 What insights could aid in solving this problem?
👉 What must we learn about our users? Where are the knowledge gaps?
👉 What are the holes in our existing information?
At this stage, the focus is on generating a broad range of questions, valuing quantity over quality.
3. Define the Research Question 🎯
Now, it's time to refine and craft the research question. At this stage, it requires a lot of tweaking for the brainstormed questions, changing words, narrowing scope down, merging questions.
I evaluate my research goal based on the following criteria:
👉 It should be specific.
👉 It should help me learn something about our users.
👉 The answer to this question should add value to the business and inform our decisions to solve the problem.
👉 The question can be answered using the available research methods.

6dSpot on, Ruby Pryor 🙌 I'd also add: When usability testing is skipped, and product decisions are based solely on analytics without understanding the 'why' behind user behavior. UX research bridges those gaps and drives user-centered improvements.
