You bought an ABM tool like 6sense Demandbase Terminus RollWorks, a division of NextRoll because they told you other similar brands were using them successfully, but your ABM program is flopping....flopping really hard. Why? Because you bought too much into the ABM hype cycle and didn't set the foundation for ABM success. Despite what some vendors may say, ABM isn't a tool -- it's a strategy. And it needs to run in tandem with demand generation. Check out the diagram below by Steve Watt -- the Account-Based-Marketing hype cycle. The real work starts when you align marketing with sales on an ABM pilot while keeping your foot on the DG gas -- set up proper reporting and tracking -- launch pilot, iterate, measure, optimize -- and, finally, scale what works. You can't skip these steps. If you start all of the way on the left, it feels great at first...but you eventually fall down that slope, and hitting the bottom will be painful.
