Beyond the Workplace: How Unexpected Spaces Are Redefining Community Connection Ever wondered where meaningful human connections truly happen? My recent exploration revealed something fascinating – third places are transforming ordinary spaces into extraordinary community hubs. Key Insights: • Hospitals aren't just for medical care – they can be warm gathering spaces • A hospital cafeteria in Virginia became a Thanksgiving community center, bringing people together during potentially stressful times • The Center in Asbury Park uses the AIDS Memorial Quilt to create healing, reflective spaces • A bookstore called Just Bookish turns reading into a community experience with open mic nights and book clubs These spaces prove that community isn't about location, but about intention and human connection. What unexpected spaces in your community bring people together? Share your experiences in the comments and let's celebrate the power of connection. Curious to dive deeper? An affinity circle is defined as: a circle of people connected by a common interest, purpose, or ideology. They serve as powerful nurturing grounds for authentic connections and community, where individuals can engage in genuine dialogue, deepen their understanding of one another, and cultivate a sense of belonging. I attended a Diversity Dialogue Dinner led by UPMC and YWCA York the other night and here's what I learned: 1. Showing Up Matters. Especially if you consider yourself devoted to Justice & Equity work but even if you're not … showing up to learn and understand is essential to your growth. 2. What we all need most is more collaboration and communication across organizations and communities. Less siloing and more true community building. Less competition over funds and more connection over serving humanity. 3. Radical Kindness is still the language we all want to speak. Not the language of violence but that of cooperation, compassion and empathy. 4. There is no greater bridge builder and safe space-making tool than FOOD. It's our biggest commonality. 5. We need more events like this and to make them widely accessible for everyone to experience so that more connections can be made. 🤔 Thank you to Iyatunde Lark-Rivers, MHA for being a fantastic facilitator and to stephanie romero for being a light with such positive energy.
