This week is World Autism Acceptance Week, something very close to my heart. In the UK there is a lot of talk about discrimination in the work place. 70% of autistic people in the UK are unemployed. 70%….. Many of the amazing people who live with autism are super talented, disciplined and focused. They struggle to portray this at interview due to their challenges with pressurised social situations. Autistic people thrive off routine. Meeting someone new for the first time is the polar opposite of routine. Too often employers base decisions on who to employ on personality and who they gel best with. Too often autistic people miss out on a job they would be great at because of this element of discrimination which is far too unspoken. When they do find work their reluctance to engage in social bravado will often stunt their progress. At University I got told a firm handshake, eye contact and a smile were sure fire ways to land that dream job. These are relatively straightforward easy wins for most people, but can be incredibly difficult for those with neurodiverse conditions. Employers must base decisions on ability and remember that it isn’t always the confident, gregarious, outgoing candidates that you need. Autistic people should be proud of their talent and be open about their condition and employers should utilise strategies to help autistic people thrive at interview. Far greater acceptance, understanding and awareness is required across all sectors. #nationalautisticsociety #autismacceptanceweek #neurodivergence

Today is #WorldAutismAwarenessDay and this year’s theme is moving from surviving to thriving. We are really pleased to have supported Autism Society of Kenya to deliver a further round of training of 160 parents and caregivers of autistic children in Mu’ranga county, Kenya, enabling them to provide therapy to the autistic children under their care which in turn enables the children to thrive – both in their home and community environments but also in school. #disability #DisabilityInclusion #autism #AutismSupport #therapy #kenya #EducationForAll #education #charity #partnership #DisabilityAwareness #AutismAwareness #RafikiThaboFoundation #SpecialEducation #AutismCommunity #InternationalDevelopment #EducationIsPower #HelpingChildren #DisabilityIsNotInability #DisabilityPride #DisabilitySupport #NeverGiveUp #NeverGiveUpOnYourDreams #sustainability #SustainableDevelopment

I was at this launch and words really cannot express my gratitude and joy to everyone who has worked on this and brought it to fruition. My joy is for all benefits that this will bring to #neurodivergent and #autistic adults already in the workplace, to those seeking work and to our #neurodivergent children. There is now (a glimmer of) hope that the workforce will be much more open and emphatic towards them and they can have the careers they dream of! A big thank you has to go out to Rt Hon Sir Robert Buckland KBE KC MP, Autistica and Dr. James Cusack, Neurodiversity in Business (NiB) - the Neurodiversity Charity and Dan Harris FRSA, and everyone else in involved. Now onto to the hard part of getting organisations to implement the recommendations. Please start by reading through the report. It really does set out very clear steps for organisations to take: https://lnkd.in/ek8vSZAY And if you want to start making your #workplace more neuro-inclusive there are lots of organisations that can help including: GAIN (Group for Autism, Insurance, Investment & Neurodiversity), The Clear Company, Ambitious about Autism, The National Autistic Society, Employment Autism, auticon UK alongside Autistica and Neurodiversity in Business (NiB) - the Neurodiversity Charity. For neurodiversity training and consultancy I can also personally recommend Exceptional Individuals. They also have a great section on support for neurodivergent jobseekers here: https://lnkd.in/eWUXHzyT #inclusion #support #neurodiversity #autism #ADHD #everyonematters #inclusiverecruitment #inclusiveworkplaces
This week's launch of the Buckland Autism Employment review was huge for the #Neurodiversity Community. Come along to the NiB annual conference on 16th April to hear directly from Rt Hon Sir Robert Buckland KBE KC MP. We need to do more to improve the #Autism employment gap, and I'm very proud that Neurodiversity in Business (NiB) - the Neurodiversity Charity contributed to and supported the review leveraging our corporate membership to provide the view from industry. Help us #ChangeTheWorld, and take this unique opportunity to learn more directly from the report's lead by booking your tickets before they sell out: https://lnkd.in/eupkwU73 ⁉ PS: Tell me in the comments what you are most looking forward to about getting together with the ND community? #NeuroInclusion #AutismAcceptance Video ID: Sir Robert Buckland talks about his Autism employment review and how he is looking forward to the NiB conference.

Flui Technologies has partnered with Autism NI, our Charity Of The Year 2024, to bring increased awareness to autism and people affected by it. April 2024 being World Autism Acceptance Month, we're highlighting a few statistics from Northern Ireland, where Autism NI is based. Did you know: -> 1 in 20 children have a diagnosis of autism (2023, DHSSPS). -> The NI Census 2021 recorded that there are 35,367 adults and children with an autism diagnosis. -> There are approximately three males diagnosed with autism for every one female diagnosed. -> Waiting times for diagnosis in Northern Ireland have topped 3 years. -> Only 21.7% of autistic people are in employment despite autistic people having the ability, skills, and will to be employed. To know more and to find out how you can help, visit our Autism NI charity webpage – https://lnkd.in/ezNjfY4c. Let's make ourselves more aware on how we can “be kind to different minds”. #Autism #AutismNI #FluiTechnologies #Charity #WorldAutismAcceptanceMonth Sorcha Mathews Ben Scott

Advocating for Autistic Rights Together 🤝 Today, I reflect on the pressing issue of rights for autistic individuals. 'Ambitious about Autism' stands as a vanguard, offering essential support and creating tailored educational opportunities to help autistic children and youth thrive. Their commitment extends beyond classrooms and into the 'Ambitious Youth Network,' fostering community and connections online. Allyship is key, whether you're supporting as staff, finding a community, or contributing through donations and volunteering. Highlighting the 'Me, My Autism and I' campaign, they also elevate stories of autistic women and girls. 'Ambitious about Autism' is more than a charity; it's a dedicated force for advocating rights and enabling brighter futures. #AutismAwareness #AutismAdvocacy #InclusiveEducation
