The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are an urgent call for action by all countries, recognising that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests. Kenya has recently undertaken a voluntary review of its progress towards the SDGs which found that the country continues to make significant strides in healthcare, education, gender equality and climate action, even as the country—and the world—faces daunting challenges. The 2024 voluntary national review (VNR) report highlights Kenya’s achievements but it is also a powerful reminder that the journey towards sustainable development is far from over. Here at Rafiki Thabo, we have a particular interest in progress towards Goal 4 – Quality Education – but are also following progress against Goal 1 – no poverty; Goal 5 – gender equality; and goal 10 – reduced inequalities. The review finds that Kenya’s education sector has improved tremendously over the years due to ambitious reforms, and public spending on education has increased in absolute terms and as a percentage of overall spending – although it is still below the ideal % benchmark. Impressive achievements had been made in primary education that approached universal levels by 2021, but were then negatively impacted by the COVID pandemic, slipping back to just over three-quarters by 2022. Kenya also still suffers from considerable regional disparities across all education outcomes. Empowering young people and their communities in Kenya, Lesotho and Uganda through education.
About us
The Rafiki Thabo Foundation’s purpose is to improve the quality of life and increase the life opportunities for members of our link communities. All our projects are initiated and managed by experienced members of the communities in Africa. The majority of our work is about supporting individuals' education in our focus communities. Through our committees in-country, we provide grants to promising students to enable them to continue their education at secondary, polytechnic and university levels where otherwise they would be unable to afford the fees. This is not child sponsorship – all students supported by Rafiki Thabo have already qualified for their further education by their own merits. We simply provide financial assistance to enable them to access the education they are qualified to have. We also support other requests from our link communities, such as a schools feeding programme in Uganda and the development of a secondary school in Lesotho.

Countless children in sub-Saharan Africa face a long walk to and from school – and often on an empty stomach. By building and renovating dormitories at our partner secondary schools, we are enabling children to stay safe in school, making them less likely to drop out, and giving them time back to study or just relax with their peers. We also work with our partner schools to ensure all children receive a hot school meal which helps their health and wellbeing, enhances their educational outcomes and again makes them less likely to drop out of school. We are delighted to share that with your generous support, we met our Big Give #ChristmasChallenge 2024 target of £15,000! And the even better news is that once we add gift aid, the total raised was a whopping £17,709!!!! Our original target of £15,000 meant we would be able to pay for the entire secondary education of 15 vulnerable girls with disabilities, or for 8 women with disabilities to complete a vocational training qualification. Now, thanks to the added gift aid, we can pay for 17 vulnerable girls or 9 women with disabilities to further their education. This is truly life-changing for them! THANK YOU to our wonderful match funders – our pledge donors (who wish to remain anonymous) and the Reed Foundation - and to all those who donated to the campaign itself. A huge thank you also to Hampton Court House and our ACACIA UK shop teams who held fundraising events for us during the week. We are also so grateful to all those who championed our campaign in whatever way they could, for example by sharing our #ChristmasChallenge socials or newsletters so their friends, family and work colleagues heard the call for support – your every action created a reaction which has enabled us to DOUBLE THE DIFFERENCE! For this we are so very grateful. 💚🎄 Amar Latif Mary-Ann Dyer #ChristmasChallenge #GivingBack #CommunitySupport #gratitude #ThankYou #compassion #charities #DisabilityAwareness #RafikiThaboFoundation #EducationForAll #DisabilityIsNotInability #DeterminedToSucceed #HelpingOthersToSucceed #EmpoweringThroughEducation

Come on people we can do this but only with your help! Please consider donating an embarrassingly large amount towards this #ChristmasChallenge - we would be DOUBLY grateful for your support! 💚 This campaign ends TOMORROW at 12pm Tuesday 10th Dec - the clock is ticking........
This is the last FULL day of our #ChristmasChallenge, less than 24 hours remain, to get your donations in to help us reach our target of £15,000! We are currently sitting at a total raise so far of £8,260. This Monday we’d like you to meet Nancy*. As a young girl, Nancy would beg on the streets to support herself and her grandmother, her vulnerability made worse as she was born with a hearing impairment. With Rafiki Thabo’s support, Nancy was able to attend Kambui School for the Deaf, followed by vocational training in hairdressing and beauty. After graduating we helped her buy the required equipment and renting a space, so that she could set up her own business. Nancy is doing so well and is able to pay for her house and restock her salon. Nancy’s family is very proud of her. She has proved to her community that people living with disabilities can also excel in life. In the words of her grandmother “Nancy has wiped out the shame from their household” meaning she has overcome the challenges and done her family proud. Together we can support so many more young women and girls like Nancy. Who can help us reach our target of £15,000 by 12pm tomorrow, Tuesday 10th December? Don’t delay, get your donations in today, while they will still be DOUBLED! Donate today on the below link - https://lnkd.in/em9tCTQ2...
