What are the benefits and drawbacks of a subscription model for podcasts? I've been having some interesting conversations on this topic in recent days and also spotted this excellent piece by Steven Goldstein from Amplifi Media. He accurately points out that subscription only works for a few rarified series, and that most programme-makers are best served by seeking mixed monetization models. Unless you have a lot of time, patience, skill, and luck then a subscription model is more likely to fail than succeed. Which is why I have always thought that programme-makers along with those comissioning series need to consider the objective of their podcast, and ask if monetization fits into that aim (or if it gets in the way). There is also a basic irony at play in the #podcasting world. More and more people are listening to them, but the profusion of shows makes monetization a harder nut to crack. This is why I have long recommended that people need to take a wider view on podcasts. They should be seen as a complement to something else an organization wants to achieve such as thought leadership, brand recognition, or loyalty. If you are interested in finding out more about the ways that podcasts can be used and the differing models for rolling them out, then do drop me a line. Also read Steve's piece! Paywalled podcasts? 🛑 Seems to work quite nicely. ✔ Kvartal, a leading Swedish independent media publication, made a segment of certain podcast episodes available to subscribers only. This led to a jump in subscribers, proving that a publication’s podcast listeners are potential digital subscribers. Here’s what happened: 🟢 Buying a whole season in advance worked very well as 85% of subscribers chose to pay in a single transaction 🟢 Remaining 15% chose to pay monthly 🟢Average rate for paid single podcast episode purchasers to convert to subscribers is 10.1% Bonus insight: early morning is the best time of day to release a podcast episode. So what does this tell us? Mainly that diversifying podcast monetisation is an avenue worth exploring (perhaps even necessary) to adequately remunerate podcasters. The current ad-funded model doesn’t accomplish that as you need to have thousands of listens to see some profit. This take on the subscription model is a novel way, and one of many, that publishers and podcast producers can use to monetise their content. We’ll see if and how fast it catches on. #podcasts #subscriptions #podcasting #monetization #revenue

IF all the independent #podcasters are half as clear about keeping an audio first mindset with video #podcasting, then I think we'll be good, right?
Bravo to 🎙 Matt Medeiros for this brilliant piece on why the overzealous craze for hashtag #podcasting to be everything hashtag #YouTube is so overblown. 🎙️ PODCASTERS 🎙️ As you may know Google Podcasts is dead! They have now begun shutting it down, however do you know what they're replacing it with? They're moving all of their resources over to YouTube Music. So what does this really mean for your Podcast and why is it a good thing? First of all, believe it or not, YouTube was already one of the top places to find new podcast audiences. Yeah that's right, the video platform is already a great place to grow your audio audience. It sounds odd, but the reasoning is quite logical. ▶️ YouTube is a platform which has always held the title of king of long form video content. Which means it's a platform largely full of long form content consumers, with viewers not just watching on their phones and laptop, but increasingly more and more on their TVs. So video'd podcasts is a natural fit into this. Simplicity. They have for once kept it quite straight forward. Simply set up your podcast on YouTube and when you upload a video tick the Podcast box and it displays it as if it were a playlist. 1 upload, and it will distribute it over YouTube as well as YouTube music. If the added visibility and audience is not enough for you, given this is a new switch and YouTube is looking to really push viewers to YouTube music, podcasts will naturally be favoured organically in algorithms at the moment, especially whilst others haven't taken advantage of it yet. I have a number of content partners where we solely work on their Podcast to YouTube and Shatter content and we've seen increased visibility, they've positioned themselves as experts in the know and this has indirectly and directly led to opening doors and opportunities which have had significant effects on their revenue. If you're not sure what it's all about, or haven't taken that leap yet, let's jump on a call and show you why you should be getting yourself on one of the biggest free platforms around! 🎥

🚀 The Evolution of Video Podcasts: A Glimpse into the Future I recently came across an enlightening article in The New York Times discussing the rise of video podcasts airing on platforms like YouTube and other podcast outlets. As someone deeply immersed in the world of digital content, particularly at FanEase, this evolution comes as no surprise—we've been anticipating this shift for at least five years. What strikes me most is the sheer magnitude of viewership these video podcasts are attracting. With numbers soaring into the tens of millions, it's clear that video podcasts have become a formidable force in the digital landscape. However, what many podcasters may not realize is that despite these impressive numbers, they often lack access to critical data for sales and further connections. That's where FanEase steps in. At FanEase, we've developed tools and our video distribution platform specifically designed to empower podcasters. Our goal? To help them not only to give creators valuable data on their terms but also sell directly to their audience—a crucial step towards achieving sustainable growth and prosperity in today's digital age. I couldn't help but recall a memorable line from the article—64 million viewers in a year. That's not just a viewership, it's a network. And with FanEase, podcasters can harness the power of their network to drive their own success, just like Suge Knight's iconic invitation: "Come to Death Row," FanEase wants you to be an artist and stay a star. So, to all the podcasters out there looking to take control of their destiny and unlock new avenues of prosperity, I say this: FanEase is here to help you make your mark and build a thriving digital presence. Let's revolutionize the future of video podcasts together. https://lnkd.in/gThjbHGJ #FanEase #VideoPodcasts #DigitalContent #DataDriven #FutureOfMedia 🚀✨

EMARKETER's newest guide calls podcasts an "undervalued medium, where attentive, binge-inclined listeners spend their time". There are a lot of great stats in the article, but this one stood out the most to us. "Podcasts will make up 5.1% of US adults’ daily digital media time in 2024, but only 0.8% of digital ad spend." These figures help paint the picture as to why a lot of podcast advertising inventory can be undervalued and efficient. Despite this gap, eMarketer is still forecasting a 19.1% YoY increase in podcast advertising spend in 2024. #podcastadvertising #podcasts #d2cmarketing

💸 Behind the scenes of every show's growth lies a crucial player: #podcast sponsors. Brands are increasingly recognising the efficacy of advertisements within podcasts.
