I find people are often surprised at how long it can take to build podcast audience. I think that's probably because the stories that hit the headlines are all about shows that get thrown tonnes of cash for their millions of downloads (deals that look very impressive but that often don't get renewed because they're unsustainable). People read a few of those and all of a sudden they assume they're in the wrong game and that podcasting must be a fast track to audience and revenue. But podcasting is no different to any other life pursuit...you've got to put the hard work in to get the results. Sure, there are occasional outliers that build audience surprisingly quickly but that's often because the people behind the microphone spent a lot of time and effort cultivating a community on another platform before they jumped into podcasting. The frustrating thing is, you can't predict how many of these people are going to come across until you press publish on your first episode. If your metric for success is downloads and ultimately revenue, you need your shows to be hosted by talent who... ▶︎ Understand how to leverage their existing audience and motivate them to move to another platform because people won't always follow you across to a podcast just because they enjoy looking at your social media feed ▶︎ Are very comfortable working with brands especially as the space is getting more competitive and brands want deeper and more creative integration ▶︎ Understand the importance of delivering and promoting content consistently over a long period of time to see growth Talent who are most successful in this space understand the power of the medium, feature their podcast proudly on their social channels and want to work with brands in a more creative way than just reading a 30 second script. #podcastgrowth #podcastaudience #podcastsuccess #podcaststrategy #podcastmarketing #audienceengagement #buildingcommunity

This is a great question! Should you be advertising on podcasts? I'm normally asked about this from the other angle - should I have advertisements on my podcast? Podcasters - what do you think? You can see from this article the potential benefit to advertisers. What about the benefit to your listeners? And you of course! Listeners - what do you think? To advertise or not to advertise? My view is a very considered - it depends! If the ads will resonate with your audience, then why not? Podcasts take time and money to produce. Advertising can help you to keep it going. If you are uncomfortable with the idea of ads, then don't. After all, it is your podcast. Do remember that some platforms may put ads in automatically in the same way that Youtube will show ads on videos. #podcasting #podcastadvertising #podcasters #podcastlistening
No prizes for guessing that my answer, when asked, was an emphatic "yes". For anyone on the fence about podcast advertising, or looking to get started, there are some good tips in here (not just mine 🙂).

Podcasts are an opportunity for advertisers, but brands shouldn't overlook other digital audio channels. As Mark Ritson says, podcasts are incremental to, rather than a replacement for, radio. "Podcasts are part of the audio church, but they're different beasts and they're incremental beasts." https://lnkd.in/eeVS6BiH #AudioAdvertising #PodcastAdvertising #DigitalAudio #DynamicAudio
