😊 Throwback Thursday: The New HR. Remember when HR was just about payroll and paperwork? In the past, HR was often seen as a Backoffice function, hidden away in the shadows of the corporate world. But today, HR is at the forefront of business strategy. Reflecting on my journey with Resourceology360, I’ve seen a monumental shift. What does HR do or maybe better asked what is the purpose of HR? The answer will depend on who you ask and some of the answers make me laugh laugh sometimes. Clearly some don't know the real answer to this question. I suspect in part because the role of HR is everchanging. I can attest to that as I have seen it grow and change over the years during my years of service. Here is my answer to that question. For starters, the purpose of HR is to provide the structure for our organizations and serves as the engine that keeps it running smoothly on a daily basis. It governs important aspects of our business, such as: The people on your/our teams, workplace culture, policies and procedures, and compliance with employment laws and labor laws. All of these can have a major financial impact on your organization especially if not done right, as well as other ramifications. So, next time you think HR does not impact the bottom line think again! The HR function is a combination of tasks, things like payroll, recruiting, onboarding, performance management..... the list goes on. The part that has changed a lot and the part that has grown is strategy. HR strategy is about the bigger picture – the long-term goals for an organization and how the HR function aligns with them and can help to achieve them. Things like: Increasing workers’ productivity, enhancing employee engagement, changing the workplace culture, achieving greater diversity in the workforce, improving the quality of hires, identifying and bringing on talent that can help an organization grow into new markets, reducing safety incidents, driving technologies, succession planning....and this list really goes on. What's at risk? good question! Lets start with two areas, first compliance issues which could result in audits, fines, legal actions and maybe being bared from government work. Then second there is employee development, this could lead to high turnover, lack of employee engagement, bad reputation making it hard to recruit talent and low productivity. Next time you think HR does not impact the bottom line reread this post! Your HR teams work very hard. To my HR colleagues don't ask for a seat at the table, take one, we have earned it.
