America’s Mental Health Is Worsening. Special Urgent-Care Clinics Step In. Mental-health urgent-care sites are proliferating across the U.S. to treat the spiraling numbers of children and adults who need mental-health care and ease a shortage of therapists that has caused many people to wait months for appointments or go to the nearest emergency room to find help. The sites are starting to change the face of mental-health treatment, offering a much-needed alternative to emergency departments—long the first point of contact for people in mental-health straits—that have become strained by an increase in visits during the pandemic. More than 20 mental-health urgent-care centers have opened in the past year alone from Colorado to Virginia. A letter published in the journal Psychiatric Services in 2021 identified 77 of the clinics across the U.S.

Mental healthcare in America is a maze — by design. Imagine a sprawling house in which every room, doorway, and hall passage was designed by a different architect. Doorways don't connect. Staircases lead to nowhere. Rooms are cut off from each other. That's how reporter Will James describes our complicated system for treating people with severe mental illness – a system that, almost by design, loses patients with psychosis to an endless loop between the streets, jail, clinics, courts and a shrinking number of hospital beds. Lost Patients is a deeply-reported, six-part docuseries examining the difficulties of treating serious mental illness through the lens of one city's past, present and future. With real-life testimonials from patients, families, and professionals on the front lines, Lost Patients provides a real, solutions-oriented look at how we got stuck here...and what we might do to break free. Lost Patients is a joint production of KUOW and Seattle Times. It is distributed by the NPR Network. https://lnkd.in/g_wz3g3n

NAMI Bucks County PA would like to thank Friends Hospital for joining us as an Event Sponsor for the 2024 NAMI Stride for Mental Health Awareness 5K Walk and as a partner in our fight against stigma! "Friends Hospital has been providing psychiatric treatment to adolescents, adults and seniors for centuries, making it the oldest private psychiatric hospital in the nation. In 1813, the Quakers founded Friends Hospital based on the belief that all people, even those with a mental illness, can live a 'moral, ordered existence if treated with kindness, dignity and respect.' The main focus of 'moral treatment' was to strengthen the mental wellness of each patient. Treatment concentrated on strengthening mental health instead of curing mental illness. This was a departure from the accepted view of the time and the guiding principle on which all of the hospital’s procedures were based. Today, Friends Hospital still operates under this original mission and—using the modern principles of wellness and recovery—strives to provide patients with the tools they need to understand and manage their symptoms. Starting with a thorough evaluation, an individualized treatment plan is developed to help stabilize acute psychiatric symptoms. This plan provides the foundation for an aftercare plan that supports the patient’s return to the community. Helping patients gain and maintain a sense of balance and accomplishment is an important step on the pathway to wellness and recovery." We have been asked to gather service users and / or family / parent carers experiences of the Mental Health Act, Section 117 Aftercare. This can be from a patient’s discharge planning on a ward, to the ongoing delivery of Section 117 in the community. What is Section 117 Aftercare? Some people who have been in hospital under the Mental Health Act can get free help and support after they leave hospital. The law that gives this right is section 117 of the Mental Health Act, and it is often referred to as 'section 117 aftercare'. Aftercare is the help people get in the community after they leave hospital which is intended to meet a need that arises from, or relates to someone’s mental health needs and to reduce the need for admission to hospital in the future. This can cover all kinds of things like healthcare, social care and supported accommodation. Please send your feedback to [email protected] or call the office 01473907087 Mind provide an accessible description of Section 117 https://lnkd.in/eVU9rDTq Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust Suffolk County Council NHS Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care Board Suffolk Libraries Suffolk County Council HEALTHWATCH SUFFOLK C.I.C. #Sct117 #Aftercare #Support #Suffolk #Discharge #MentalHealth #FamilyCarer #ServiceUser #ParentCarer

May may be ending, but let's keep the conversation going. Mental health awareness isn't limited to a single month—it's a year-round journey of support, understanding, and compassion. Arise is a patient-focused, physician-directed therapy center, with locations across North Mississippi. Our team provides comprehensive medication and therapy services to address mental health needs for an array of patients. We offer appointments with our psychiatrist, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners, and therapists, who can treat the full spectrum of behavioral health disorders in person or via telehealth. Arise eliminates the typical waits or frustrations with appointment times while maintaining Physician-direction of all therapy services. Gone are the days of therapy at one location and medication management at another. Comprehensive care is what we do. Let's break the stigma! #theraphyyoudeserve #EndTheStigma #MentalHealthMatters"

Getting to the point of developing a mental health treatment plan can be a challenging process in itself and patients are often left to navigate wait times, choice of clinician and gap payments. Outside mental health treatment plans, #counselling is a good option for many people. While not usually covered by mental health treatment plans, the cost is often comparable to the gap payment with a psychologist or psychiatrist. There are also #nurse-led interventions that can guide #patients. It's not always straight forward, that's why emotional and mental health is one of the many aspects of #holistic #healthcare that is part of the #PathwaysNurse protocol.
