I’ve been star-struck (pun intended) about how Puneet Gupta and team is building Astrotalk There’ve been many astrology apps that have come and gone but the Astrotalk team has quite nicely cracked a distribution model that’s making it hard to ignore them. What I like 👍 - nice top-ups for live chat starting at as low as ₹5/min - variety of astrologers of different kinds (vedic, tarot, vastu, western etc) - you can book poojas and buy religious merchandise - also read kundalis/birth charts for free (big thing in India) - aggressive retargeting ads strategy on Instagram and whatsapp product marketing What I’ve read but haven’t verified (hypothesis) 🔻 - quality control over astrologers - possibly high churn (but that’s true for any biz today) - “unkept promises” by astrologers could be affecting NPS and creating disgruntled customers - pricing math for astrologers could be broken. An astrologer that’s making ₹5/min and if on avg they do 10 min readings with 30 customers daily on the app = ₹1500/day (which is barely anything) However the distribution will keep attracting users which is attractive to astrologers. Every second person I talk to knows about astrotalk in some manner (either their parents are forcing it on them or they’re matching cofounder kundalis 😆) What I’m most intrigued about is the timing of Astrotalk’s planned IPO - uncertainty about jobs and an economic recession fuels fears and doubts that will only probably draw more people to the platform. An account on quora anonymously said they spent ₹5,00,000+ on the app for remedies, consultation fees, and religious merch! 👀 This post was originally a discussion with a friend this week but I thought it'd make for a cool thought dump here. Also Puneet - if you need help with bugs on the app, hit me up! Perhaps your stars will align with Pradeep Soundararajan. beta tumhare hatho ki lakeerein bata rahi hai ki aage chalke kuchh bada karoge - an astrologer to me in my childhood 🙃 Not sure about that prediction but an astrology startup Astrotalk founded in 2017 by Puneet Gupta and Anmol Jain , now having 50 lakh users is making crores of revenue out of it. It's an app connecting advice-seekers with astrologers. They're also looking to expand in the mental wellness domain and expand internationally. Has raised $20 million in Series - A funding round. Many of you would be thinking that their users would be from Tier-2, Tier-3 cities but surprisingly it's exactly the opposite. Around 85% of users are from Tier-1 cities, aged between 18-35. Women users contribute to 57% of revenue and 17% revenue from outside of India. let's look at some data: - FY20: profitable - FY21: 65 cr revenue, 1 cr profit - FY22: 116 cr revenue, 11 cr profit - FY23: 282 cr revenue, 27 cr profit - Chat: 65% income, Calls: 35% income, livestream and online puja: 5% income - Astrologer count: 15,000 - New members spend: 200-500 per month - Customer repeat rate: 20% - Competitors: VAMA App , InstaAstro 60% queries are around relationships and marriage while 30% queries are on career or business. Celebrities like Anupriya Goenka, Virendra Sehwag, Ranbir kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor to name a few, are their brand promoters. As per experience of astrologers on these apps, many people come to just talk and not for astrology, as they feel lonely and need someone to talk to. In the next few years Mental wellness can be a big domain to work on. what's your thought on these astrology apps? #astrology #astrotalk

Is it okay for a CEO to spend Rs 50 crore on a birthday celebration? Not just this, he also gave 1 day free service to all. Puneet Gupta, the founder of Astrotalk! He recently celebrated astrotalk’s 7th birthday in the best way possible. Before founding AstroTalk, Puneet co-founded an IT service company called CodeYeti, But, after his co-founder left, Puneet remembered an astrologer’s prediction from years ago. Which inspired him to start Astrotalk, A platform where people can connect with astrologers for advice. In 2017, Puneet launched Astrotalk with minimal investment and no major marketing push. His strategy? 📌 Focus on building trust with users by ensuring access to verified astrologers and offering pay-per-minute consultations. Astrotalk began growing organically, This is exactly how it went: ✅ 2017: Astrotalk was launched. ✅ 6 months: The business grew through word-of-mouth with little advertising. ✅ 2023: Daily revenue reached ₹30 lakh, with a target of ₹600 crore in annual revenue. One of the smartest moves Puneet made was focusing on quality over quantity. He built a loyal customer base, By carefully selecting astrologers and ensuring a smooth user experience. Today, Astrotalk serves more than 3 million users worldwide. The platform is on track to generate ₹600 crore in revenue this year and a projected profit of ₹100 crore. This proves that even a little spark can grow into something huge. Puneet’s idea of redefining how people connect with astrology was brilliant. So the answer to my question is: If you have it, why not spend it? hehe. Any thoughts? Comment section is free!

A couple of days back, I shared few numbers on AstroTalk. Numbers were amazing but I somewhere tried to connect it with the number of educated people in India. Why I did so? Because I saw an ample amount of advertisement from them reflecting a conversation on how Astrologers were helping find the EXACT DATE when their Ex-boyfriends or girlfriends are coming back again in their life. And there were more such future predictions. So first things first. No astrologer can predict the exact date or time of any event happening in the future. They might help you give some probability of events or certain range of dates. Coming to Astro Talk, this way of luring Indian audience targeting their traumas of past relationships in my opinion is not an ethical way of marketing. It's simply luring or trapping. And that is what I was trying to portray through those numbers. But having a couple of comments and personal DMs from people on above made me feel like giving a clarity that it wasn't against the astrology or the people who believe in one. I was trying to highlight how a business is 100Cr profitable out of targeting people's emotions and selling just a HOPE Personally, I do not believe in astrologers and never explored astrology till date. However, 20 years back some astrologer told my family that I'll be writer by profession to which we all laughed because of my inclination towards maths since childhood. Ironically or maybe by destiny, I found my interest in writing lately only to write a linkedin post expressing my views on astrology. Haha!

In 2017, Puneet Gupta, who had graduated from IIT and was working in the corporate sector, faced a difficult phase in his career. Out of curiosity and desperation, he consulted an astrologer. The astrologer's predictions were surprisingly accurate, which piqued his interest in astrology despite his initial skepticism. This Is How Astrotalk founded in 2017 by Puneet Gupta. This wasn’t the first time he had entertained the idea, but a previous attempt in 2015 had led to failure, forcing him to return to corporate employment. In terms of financial performance, Astrotalk has shown remarkable progress. For the fiscal year 2024, the company reported an annual revenue of INR 650 crore, a substantial increase from INR 282 crore in FY23. This impressive growth is further highlighted by the company's profit after tax (PAT) of INR 100 crore for FY24. The company's net worth has also surged, reaching INR 1,420 crore in FY24. As of 2024, the company boasts a valuation of $300 million, reflecting its robust market position and growth trajectory. Astrotalk's business model focuses on providing astrological services directly to consumers, a strategy that has allowed it to serve over 3 crore customers. In terms of funding, Astrotalk recently completed its Series A funding round, raising $9.5 million. This round was led by Elev8 Venture Partners, bringing the total funding raised by the company to $30.3 million. This infusion of capital is expected to further fuel Astrotalk's growth and expansion plans. Puneet Gupta's journey from a skeptic to a successful entrepreneur in the astrology sector exemplifies how personal experiences can lead to innovative business ideas. Despite facing challenges, including a dip in revenue during the COVID-19 lockdown, Astrotalk's growth has been remarkable. Today, Astrotalk continues to thrive, helping millions navigate their lives with astrological guidance. Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/dzjc7YnT

I recently saw a post about "faith-tech" astrology startup founder boasting its milestone revenue achievement. A large part of their revenue is apparently generated from the US. The founder left out the detail about its subscriber base's country of origin. I doubt that they collect that kind of data. But even if they did, I'm pretty sure they would just be unspecific about their userbase (when has astrology ever been specific and not vague?) I've always had my reservations against astrology and astrologers. None of them knew how difficult it was to crack an M3 arrear in Anna University but somehow knew what the future would hold for us as an engineer. An astrologer, during my childhood, predicted that I would become successful in whatever I venture out to become. And all of that would be through my personal efforts and without any intervention. He was telling this to Indian middle-class parents who want to hear exactly that. He was spot on with his ICP and messaging. Was it what actually happened? Yes and no. (Again, this is the kind of ambiguity that lets astrologers thrive.) All the jobs I have listed on my LinkedIn are through referrals. At the same I did not get them with just referrals, but also because I worked hard to upskill. But astrologers and Indian parents would ignore the part of referrals. Now, that there is a fear of global recession, people feel insecure and have brought back the COVID trend of going to astrologers, who have no clue of what they do at work or how geo-politics works, for reassurance. The only thing that makes me happy here is that a lot of astrologers out there are now on some kind of payroll and know what it feels like to have the government take a good chunk of their income. Bet no astrologer ever predicted that they would have to file a Form 16 someday.

Puneet Gupta, After hearing so much about AstroTalk, I finally decided to download the app—even though I don’t usually believe in astrology 🌌. The app is well-designed and user-friendly, but I want to share my honest feedback as a first-time user 📝. In my first session, the 5-minute chat duration felt rushed—almost like catching a train 🚆! A minimum of 10 minutes would allow a better and more meaningful conversation. On top of that, the first astrologer I connected with charged me for 2 minutes 💸 but didn’t provide any answers and ended the session😔. It was a disappointing start. While customer support was responsive 👍, such experiences can discourage first-time users, regardless of how strong the marketing is. That said, my second astrologer was excellent 🌟, and the overall app has potential. However, a seamless first experience is key to building trust and interest for new users. No matter how strong the marketing, the real hero is always the product or service itself 🏆. I hope this feedback helps AstroTalk enhance their service for all users! #AstrologyApp Astrotalk #CustomerExperience #UserFeedback #FirstImpressions #ProductImprovement

Astrologers are “polluting” this space! They often use terms like “Shani Sade Sati” or “Rahu Dasha” to create fear and uncertainty. They’ll say things like, “Aapke upar Shani Sade Sati chal raha hai, isliye mushkilein badh sakti hain” or “Mangalik dosh hai.” These statements sound very serious, but they are vague and don’t offer any real explanation of why these planetary positions will affect you in this way. What happens next? You start stressing about every little challenge you face, believing it’s a result of these planetary phases. The astrologer may then suggest expensive remedies, like wearing certain gemstones or performing costly rituals, claiming they will protect you from the negative effects of these phases. But the reality is, these predictions are often general enough to apply to anyone. They play on your fear, making you feel like you need to spend money to “fix” something that’s part of a natural life cycle. In the end, it’s a tactic to keep you hooked, making you feel helpless without their “guidance”—all for the purpose of minting money from your worries. Do you agree that astrologers are using astrology to predict vaguely ?? I’m Mahima Mor, a planet coach who works with planetary energies and logical science with a background in physics.
