Sadly I couldn’t find anything written or said on one of the most important aspects of #ProductMarketing (PMM) - #Feedback on Product Marketing collaterals. So this is my post on behalf of all #PMMs who suffer the pain of “Vague Feedback”. Before you read ahead, I urge everyone - Please give PMMs pointed feedback. PMM is one function that hates vagueness especially when it comes to feedback. Some examples of bad feedback -  ❌This needs work. (“What work? Is it missing business benefits? Or problem? Or sentence restructuring? Or what?”) ❌The headline needs to be more punchy (“Should I add emojis?” FYI - I AM NOT A CREATIVE WRITER) ❌What is in it for customers (“Our entire product!”) ❌This looks too complex. Tone it down (🤔) ❌This looks too basic. Make it advanced (🤔) ❌Everybody provides the same solution. How are we different? (“First please create meaningful differentiators in the product. Once we have it, PMMs will happily plaster differentiator everywhere”) ❌And this is the classic since the boom of ChatGPT - “Add AI/Generative AI everywhere even though it doesn’t make sense”. (“Have you done market research? Customers want simple products to do simple things and get them through the day!”) So what are a few examples of good feedback -  ✅Instead of “This needs work”, please mention what can be done to make it work. E.g. “Although the starting is enticing where you have covered problems, business benefits can be articulated in three categories - CSAT, ROI, and Customer Support. This will increase the readability” ✅Good example - “This headline is missing business benefits around customer experience. As the target audience is in CX, let’s focus on CSAT or any other relevant metrics.” ✅Another one - “The persona for this page is technical users - Let’s add some tech differentiators that are really helpful to this persona. Or This page is for business users - Let’s talk about low-code solutions, cost-effectiveness, and project management by keeping the language simple.” I guarantee you, that if we PMMs get good pointed feedback we can close the project at lightning speed and deliver in a flash. But when we get vague comments, it demotivates us to work on that project anymore. In my opinion, subscriptions for the mass market does not work in dating apps. For a niche audience maybe. But definitely not for the mass market Let me explain When we take a subscription for an OTT platform, we know that there is a large content library that we will get access to. But when I take a subscription for a dating app, it is a roll of the dice - akin to gambling. Because I do not know whether I will find a love partner or not by paying the subscription. Hence in English dating apps only 3-4% users buy a subscription Contrast this with the approach that we have taken at flutrr . We have Microtransactions priced between Rs. 30-70 and bundles of such microtransactions ( at a discount) . In each of these Microtransactions, the user is very clear what he/she will get if he/ she pays. There is no ambiguity and know false expectations . Therefore more than 18% of our users buy these Microtransactions. And this fact coupled with our very low Cost of Acquisition will not only help us reach profitability but also help us scale with minimal capital Another benefit of this approach is that users can use the app without buying Microtransactions immediately. Therefore , their lifetime and longevity on the App goes up giving us the opportunity to convert these users to paying customers in the future. If at any point of time we decide to seriously monetise eyeballs thru advertising, this will help us immensely In fact, we have tied up with CouponDunia to offer our users free branded coupons. When they redeem the coupons we get a revenue share. The user is happy to get an offer without having to suffer intrusive ads. And we make money too Building for Bharat is about creating a win-win proposition. It is a difficult game. But hugely scalable and profitable. And in this Jio leads the way.

Having seen the conventional funnel in large scale operations for products in BYJU'S, and an inverted funnel that starts with free offerings focused on the customer's problems for Design Crescendo gigs, there are a few things that I've picked up about product and service marketing in general. When you're dealing with direct-response and bottom-of-the-funnel marketing, it makes more sense to promote your offer than your product. This is where you drive people into demos, consultations, audits, etc. Often, smaller units start here, and then expand to the middle and top as time and budget allow. The reason why at some point the expansion to other parts of the funnel is essential is because marketing only your offer isn't easily scalable. There are only so many prospects "in-market" at any given time, and at some point, you have to invest in generating demand rather than just capturing it with offer marketing.
