This event goes beyond individual achievements; it represents our collective commitment to fostering a society that sees value and potential in every person. Our program is designed to educate and empower, with a curriculum developed by those who understand the journey best—returned citizens themselves. I have witnessed firsthand in our community the high turnover rates, burnout, and complete undervaluing of nonprofit employees. Our sector needs to shift from a paradigm of scarcity and fear to one of worth and value. Nonprofit leaders cannot shrink from ensuring their staff are fairly compensated. These two inactions have stagnated our sector, impeding our organizations from competing for the best talent. Valuing employees and recognizing their CHOICE to work in the nonprofit sector feels like creating environments and spaces where employees are: 1) paid competitively to other sectors; 2) valued for their work as team members; and 3) acknowledged as the people who are most important to the advancement of the mission.

🎇 How Diverse Talent Builds Stronger Teams When we hire diverse talent, we fill roles and transform our teams. Over the years, we’ve brought on people who have done incredible things, and their contributions have had a dynamic impact on our field leads. Here’s the most rewarding part: Our team no longer considers hiring diverse talent charitable. Instead, they recognize it as a strategic advantage. These individuals bring unique skills, perspectives, and values that elevate our projects and drive our company’s success. Diversity isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a catalyst for innovation and growth. We all win when we open doors for those who have been overlooked. "We've returned to work, but we are working differently." We are managing geographically diverse teams. Team members may have complex health challenges + family needs. In nonprofit administration, the flexibility required to handle these new work challenges is costing MORE - while at the same time the old trope of "keep administrative costs low" continues. Nonprofit leader and Hiver Kimberly Lewis had so many insights to contribute to the conversation. In her decades long career leading nonprofit organizations (who have sometimes been social enterprises) she feels that successfully supporting staff while also performing your mission has never been more of a challenge. Nonprofiteers, particularly in Kimberly's organization Goodwill Industries of East Texas, are still doing the work 1-1, face to face. Touching hands and touching lives (with degrees and certifications required). Talented, passionate people with the right education are becoming harder to find - which means providing the needed services in a regulated industry becomes impossible. Humility - Compassion - Vision These are just a few key takeaways from our monthly Young Kings Luncheon with Andy Patterson, President & CEO of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation. Humility: Being of service is one of our highest callings and signs. of real philanthropy. A powerful nugget from Andy was knowing yourself well enough to lead where you’re strongest. Compassion: “It’s hard to have compassion from a distance.” Lean in, slow down, and let people know they’re seen—it could be exactly what they need to believe in themselves. Vision: As our community grows, we need to think 10 steps ahead to address challenges now, creating solutions for the future. These monthly meetings—and advocates like Andy—keep me inspired to continue building pipelines for positive change.
