🚀 5G Connectivity: PDU Session Establishment Ever wondered how your 5G device seamlessly connects to the internet, enabling lightning-fast data transfers and low latency experiences? It all starts with a process called PDU Session Establishment, ensuring that your device can access the network/internet and exchange data smoothly. PDU Session: Step by Step 🔄 Imagine you're about to stream a video, and your 5G-enabled device is gearing up to connect. Here's how it all happens: 1. UE Initiates the Request: Your device (UE) sends a NAS message to the Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF). This message includes key details like the PDU Session ID, Slice and request type, indicating that it wants to establish a new connection. 2. AMF processes the Request: The AMF recognizes that this is a request for a new PDU Session. 3. AMF Reaches Out to SMF: Sending over all the necessary information - SUPI, Slice, PDU Session ID, AMF ID, Request Type, PCF ID, Priority Access, User location information, etc. 4. SMF Registers the Session: If the SMF hasn't handled this session before, it registers with the User Data Management (UDM), ensuring your session is tracked and managed correctly. 5. SMF Responds to AMF: This could be an acceptance or a rejection of request, depending on whether the session setup meets all criteria. 6. SMF Selects UPF and Allocates IP: For PDU session 7. SMF sends Session Establishment/Modification Request to the UPF and provides Packet detection, enforcement and reporting rules to be installed on the UPF for this PDU Session 8. The UPF acknowledges by sending an Session Establishment or Modification Response. 9. SMF to AMF: Set PDU Session ID, QFI, QoS Profile, Slice Type, UE Integrity Protection Maximum Data Rate etc. 10. AMF Inform the RAN: about the new PDU Session Establishment Acceptance. 11. RAN to UE: Signalling exchange with the UE that is related with the information received from SMF. 12. RAN to AMF: The RAN then informs the AMF that the session is successfully set up. 13. & 14. Data Flow Begins: With everything in place, your device now start sending (uplink) and receiving (downlink) data, enjoying the benefits of 5G speeds and connectivity after connecting with internet. 1moVery well explained pdu session establishment call flow. Can we add steps below as well. 1. NRF/SCP signalling (depends on operator to operators) 2. After step 5 , SMF will trigger sm policy request towards PCF ( will get pcf fqdn via SMF cache or by NRF discovery). 3. After this SMF triggers Charging requests to CHF via N40 interface. 4. EBI assignment of pdu session will also take place.
