As we find ourselves doing on a daily basis at the start of this year after losing a member of the Class of 2025 just before the start of the school year to a tragic accident, we are balancing grief and joy, a profound sense of loss and equally profound hope in who we can become as a community this year. An invitation to a free online workshop in collaboration with the Vermont Collaborative for Practice Improvement & Innovation (VCPI) From Climate Anxiety to Climate Resilience Thursday April 25, 2024, 10:00-11:00am EDT This event is specifically for coaches, mentors, mental health providers, counselors, social workers, psychologists, school counselors, educators... If you are a helping professional, climate anxiety has most likely entered your office or classroom. How do you face these complex and emotionally charged conversations about climate change that fall beyond your training and scope of expertise? How do you create climate conversations that are generative - not overly positive, but realistic and empowering? How do you maintain your composure when you share the same overwhelming feelings as those you are trying to help? Join on April 25 from 10-11am via Zoom to learn practices that can not only support you with your own experience, but also leave you better equipped to help the audience that you serve. Visit the VCPI event page for more details and registration (free). Credit: VCPI

New Blog Post! 💡 I recently shared a reflection on navigating unexpected situations with grace and teamwork. Last week, during a tornado warning, I witnessed the incredible strength of our school community at The John Crosland School—staff supporting students in individualized ways and students showing resilience in the face of uncertainty. This experience was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. I’d love for you to read and share your thoughts! 👉 Read here: https://lnkd.in/eB6wT7cM

Research suggests that when we take a few moments to focus on the good things in our lives, it can increase our happiness and wellbeing. We discuss gratitude and feeling grateful with primary school pupils in Step 2 of the Hummingbird Project. Below, a pupil at St Gabriel's CE Primary School in Rochdale shares their thoughts. What are you most thankful for? Let us know in the comments. 🙂 #learningwaystofeelhappier #HummingbirdProject #positivepsychology #positiveeducation #childrensmentalhealth

Week 2: Make the choice to belong. It’s easy to feel lonely in college. Maybe you look around and it feels like everyone else has found their team, or their organization, or their place, and you haven’t. Or maybe you have found your place but even in a crowded room you feel like you’re the only one. You see everyone else posting about their amazing connections and best friends and your feed looks empty in comparison. We have an epidemic of loneliness around the world. Learning how to meaningfully connect with others right now will help you at DePauw but it will also teach you lessons you’ll carry with you throughout your life (and enable you to help others, too). The Surgeon General offers some practical suggestions on making meaningful connections at https://lnkd.in/gS9t29b3. A few of my favorites: Invest time in nurturing your relationships through consistent, frequent, and high-quality engagement with others. Minimize distraction during conversations to increase the quality of time you spend with others. Seek out opportunities to serve and support others. Try helping your family, friends, and community members or participating in community service. Be responsive and supportive and practice gratitude. Reflect the core values of connection in how you approach others through the actions you take and conversations you have. Actively engage with people of different backgrounds and experiences to expand your understanding of and relationships with others. My hope for you this week is that you take the first step to a meaningful connection this week. Every week while classes are in session I send a message of encouragement to the DePauw student body. This is today's.

Compassion begins with seeing others in distress. Moved inwardly, we can choose to act in ways that reduce the suffering. "At Andrews University, we aspire to be a community known for our unwavering compassion, for consistently reaching out and caring for our students, for our community, and for one another" (AU President John W Taylor V). What are the other 6 Andrews University core values? Learn more at the link: https://lnkd.in/gs3GpsCp #AndrewsUniversityOnline #OnlineLearning #AndrewsCoreValues

“I believe the children 🧒 are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.” - Whitney Houston, The Greatest Love of All. I know that there are more of you out there who secretly love that 1980s Whitney Houston hit than are willing to admit, John Guidos Abby Thompson Bryan LeMonds Tim Dyer to name just a few. The late great Whitney was onto something though. I took part as a panelist in a recent Peace360 Initiative event here in the Milwaukee area. If you’re not familiar, this group promotes healthy and peaceful communities around the world by working to strengthen families. I was asked to speak on ways to instill habits and skill sets in children that are foundational to becoming strong stewards of wealth as adults. What are some of those habits? Accountability → learning to accept responsibility for actions and reactions….and the rewards and consequences that come with them. Goal Setting → Being able to set an objective and making the necessary effort to achieve it. Sacrifice → Delaying instant gratification for the hope of something better, later. How are these habits developed? Be a strong and consistent role model: good personal financial management starts with Mom & Dad 👫 Allow your child to struggle. Learning to accept the consequences that come with some decisions is important, but not easy. Dealing with them later is even harder. Start now. Marble Method: Gamify the process of learning accountability actions that result in rewards and sacrifice. Want to learn more about gamifying accountability for you kids? Shoot me a message and I’ll send you an example.

The world has been changing for decades and we don’t engage with the community like we used to; it's a fact of life and we won't be returning to that. Impact data (read: investor-grade data) is quickly becoming a gateway to funding; I don’t agree with this, but in our data-centric society I’m not surprised. In my opinion, with or without data, funders have every reason to give generously, because of tax incentives. Also, funders are risk-averse. Even though there are calls for foundations to serve as our “risk capital”, trying social innovations that the market or state cannot bear (because of accountability + time). And yes, I question the accuracy of impact data, but am encouraged by places like Impact Genome that at least try and tie program services to measurable outcomes, like home ownership, decreases in emergency room visits, etc.. In addition, impact forces nonprofits to focus on donor’s needs and not on services. He's right on all of these points. However, to the point about “whether evaluation is necessary at all..." (referenced in "Counting Alone" essay); yes, indeed it is. In one very crucial respect: We want to ensure that the generous tax subsidies we give are worth what we get in return. That can't happen without data. #philanthropy #socialimpact #corporatephilanthropy #fundraising
"We started trusting each other less and trusting the numbers more." This is one of the many takeaways from my conversation with Aaron Horvath - a sociologist and Research Scholar at the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society (Stanford PACS) - on how our "obsession with metrics" shapes civic life, social trust, and democracy. My conversations with Aaron over the years have helped put words to some of the tensions I experienced while running the Armed Services Arts Partnership (ASAP) and conducting academic research. Why must seemingly everything be quantified and measured? What is the relationship between this emphasis on measurement and social trust? How does the act of evaluation, itself, affect how we prioritize the things that can't easily be measured? We dig into these questions and many others, in all of their messiness, in this week’s Connective Tissue Q&A. I hope you enjoy this conversation with Aaron as much as I did. https://lnkd.in/eEFPuUSE
