It's great to see our project team making authentic connections with class teachers and to hear that our work has been transformative for students. #learningwaystofeelhappier #positivepsychology #positiveeducation #hummingbirdproject

The Gift of a Hug! As I walked down the corridor, I heard someone calling my name—“Sonia, Sonia, Sonia!” I turned quickly to find the class teacher from one of the Hummingbird project sessions I had facilitated earlier that morning. She said, "I just wanted to express my appreciation for the fantastic work you’re doing with our students. I can see it transforming their behavior. May I give you a hug?" I happily replied, "Sure," and we embraced warmly. That hug was a precious gift that brightened my day. As a facilitator of the Hummingbird project, a positive psychology initiative aimed at enhancing students' happiness and mental well-being, I typically visit for five to six weeks, once a week. This can make it challenging to feel integrated into the school community since I’m only a temporary presence. Therefore, receiving that acknowledgment for the short time I’m there made me feel like a valuable part of the team contributing to the students' holistic well-being, which was truly wonderful. So here’s a shout-out to everyone in various fields working to improve people's mental and emotional health. I’m sending you all virtual hugs—remember, you are loved, appreciated, and valued. The moral of the story is to give someone a hug (with their permission, of course). Compliment someone. Appreciate those around you. Be grateful and recognize the blessings in your life; you’ll be amazed at how rich you truly are. #thegiftofahug #AbiesSonia #gratitude #appreciation #kindness #positivepsychology

One of the ways we can feel happier and more confident is by adopting a growth mindset. This means believing that our skills and abilities will not always stay the same as they are now (a fixed mindset), but can be improved over time and with practice. A growth mindset encourages us not to give up straightaway when things don't work out for us. It also involves reframing "failures" as opportunities to learn and progress. This drawing by a pupil at The Heys School in Prestwich is a great illustration of the difference between growth and fixed mindsets and the different emotions we feel as a result of our thoughts and beliefs. #growthmindsets #learningwaystofeelhappier #positivepsychology #positiveeducation #hummingbirdproject

Once the six-week Hummingbird Project is complete, we visit the school again to drop off a box of resources, including books, games, toys and other materials to help pupils to continue learning to take care of their mental wellbeing. A great post about "positive noticing" by our Hummingbird Project Co-ordinator Abieyuwa Sonia Ebenezer-bamigbayan, inspired by her recent visit to Washacre Primary School in Bolton.

Positive Noticing Day! I was pleasantly surprised during my visit to Washacre Primary School today, where I noticed that both teachers and students wore tags on their clothing and uniforms featuring positive statements about themselves. When I inquired about the purpose, I learned that it was the head teacher's idea to celebrate Positive Noticing Day. This was truly remarkable, especially as the students radiated joy while reading aloud their positive statements, filled with a sense of accomplishment. This celebration aligned perfectly with the theme of 'Being Thankful and Kind,' which I presented to the students today, and we created beautiful 'Thank You' cards for their friends and family. Positive Noticing Day is celebrated on November 13th, aimed at encouraging both adults and children to recognize positive qualities within their families, schools, and communities. This practice can be embraced throughout the year. During the Positive Noticing Day celebration, a teacher remarked, "I appreciate your calm demeanor around the students; it helps them remain calm as well." Hearing this truly warmed my heart. I was so impressed by the significance of this celebration and its positive impact on both students and teachers that I felt compelled to knock on the head teacher Mr. Chris Howarth's door to commend him for championing this celebration in the school. Washacre Primary is an exceptional school that not only participates in the Hummingbird project The Hummingbird Project but also integrates its interventions into daily school life. I encourage you to engage in positive noticing today and always, and watch as your relationships with others flourish. #positivenoticingday #positive #mindfulness #AbiesSonia #Hummingbirdproject

Did you know that today is #WorldKindnessDay? Being kind to others and to ourselves is so important for everyone's mental health and happiness. In the Hummingbird Project we ask pupils to carry out a "random act of kindness" for someone else during the week. They write down what they did, and how it made the other person and themselves feel, and report back to the class in the next session. Another exercise pupils can do in their workbooks is to write a letter to themselves as if it was from a kind friend, full of encouragement and support. Both of these are really powerful exercises that we could all try carrying out to spread some much-needed kindness through the world. #randomactsofkindness #learningwaystofeelhappier #positivepsychology #positiveeducation #hummingbirdproject
