SEO 𝒄𝒂𝒏 be a quick win, just like it has been for this client I've been working with since March 2024. But... In this case, like most 'quick win SEO' case studies, the reason traffic improved so quickly is because a technical issue was spotted and fixed early on, resulting in instantaneous traffic increases. I discovered that the URLs for some of their top performing pages had been changed a few months prior, with no redirects added. The new URLs had not picked up much traffic at all. In this instance, I suggested reverting back to the old URLs, which was quickly implemented and boom, traffic started returning straight away. I am fully expecting Clicks to continue rising over the next few months, as there are other issues with previously high performing content being removed, inconsistencies with hreflang, a lack of redirects from a previous domain and more! So, plenty of traffic improvements are being made with technical SEO alone. No new content. No new backlinks. No on page optimisation. Just crawling the site, investigating strange patterns in the data and suggesting the fix. Quick, easy wins. Long live technical SEO!

So much lazy SEO work it is crazy to see basic principles not applied on very large businesses. There are 3 categories for fixing SEO issues: 1) Ignored / Missed - No attention to detail or thoughtfulness to regularly audit work. 2) Lazy - Knows about the issues, while fixing it, prefers to adopt a bandaid approach. 3) Good - Solves the issue entirely and improves the SEO assets further. I found an example on a large eCom jewellery business where one of their most popular blog articles had links to broken product pages that both 404 and that 301 redirected to the homepage. Leaving the 404 = IGNORED 301 redirect to the homepage = LAZY I would prefer to remove the links to broken URLs entirely (301 redirect to appropriate and relevant products, if no suitable products exist, the most relevant product category), then update the content with other LIVE products that can be helpful to users/customers. Not to mention update the content, merge older articles into the article that aren't performing and actually shrink bloat of your index. Seems counterintuitive but it works. Quality over quantity. SEOs are often more concerned with adding NEW content that they forget to update old content and make it better. Especially content that used to rank well but over time dropped for multiple reasons. This is why this client dropped. Content is just out of date, old articles linking to broken pages and internal linking is IGNORED entirely. If you don't love SEO, it is the fastest way to ZAP your entire motivation for getting up for work in the morning. Technical SEO is more important than ever. Let no man deceive you!

SEO is dead, long live SEO SEO is not about img alt tags, or scoring 100 in Google Pagespeed Insights anymore (if it ever was). It's about: Your internal linking structure (information architecture) Backlinks (they are still very much relevant, both traditional targeted linkbuilding and getting in big publications with Digital PR) Today’s content needs to be tailored or experience-driven, generic won’t cut it. SEO will continue to evolve, it's optimising content to meet users' demands in search engines. The bar is high though, if you are in eCommerce you will need strong collection pages with content and internal link widgets, while professional service businesses will need location pages and service or industry-specific pages too. If you have an informational site (think travel blog) it's going to be a pretty long road, but eCommerce and professional service will continue to dominate in SERPs. Guess ill get rid of the awards now that its dead 😭
