Over the last seven years, I've seen numerous coffee shops open and close their doors. As a consultant with years of experience, I've identified five critical factors to consider before taking the plunge. First, it's essential to have a clear mission and vision for your café. This foundation will provide the resilience needed to persevere when challenges arise. Second, convenience is key for attracting customers. Ensure your shop has 4-5 parking spaces within 20 feet of the entrance to maximize accessibility. Third, you must be an expert on your offerings. Invest in gaining experience and training to ensure your products are exceptional. Fourth, understand the dynamics of the area where your shop will be located. Know your potential customer base and integrate your business into their daily routines. Consistency in your operating hours is crucial. Finally, prioritize acquiring quality brewing equipment, and strive to minimize overhead. A robust financial plan is essential. On February 20th our beautiful retail location was struck by an impaired driver in the early hours of the night. Thankfully the store was closed at the time, and no one was hurt. There was considerable structural damage done to the building, forcing us to close our doors for the foreseeable future. As you can imagine, a small business owner that relies heavily on in store traffic, our worry and stress crept in quite quickly. 💡 What happens now? 💡 How long until we can reopen? 💡 How will this impact our growth? We are a tasting room after all! We pride ourselves on offering the highest level of customer service out there. Hosting community events, tasting sessions, sharing our passion and love for quality ingredients and well being are things that our brand has been built on. It didn't take long for our thought process to shift into, "Okay, how can we take this event that's totally out of our control, and turn it into an opportunity to breathe life into other aspects of our business?" I live by the mentality that while we cannot always control a situation, we can always control how we react. We don't have to be grateful that our store was damaged, but we can be grateful for the opportunities that now lie ahead. You don’t have to be good at everything. You just have to be brilliant at something. I have talked about the umbrella shop in London so many times at brand development and business development sessions - it is my go-to example of specialism, of going narrow but deep. These days, the businesses that are stuck in a historical mindset of having to be good at everything, at pleasing everyone, are struggling. This is where the world of the challenger comes in, taking chunks out of the generalists business and sales, by being much better at some part of it. It takes market size, and building awareness, and work/luck/grit but most importantly it just takes being really, really good at something. I have always had this theory that everyone excels at three things. My personal ones would be · Making sandwiches · Sleeping on trains · Creating order from chaos For brands, you can’t be brilliant at three things. Pick one. What are you really, really good at?
