Thank you Annie Turner for this summary of our final conversation for the opening keynote of the 2024 Mobile Europe #Telco to #Techco conference, which took place a few weeks ago. It was a dense fireside chat, with you jumping into a lot of topics where #tech could open opportunity doors, incrementally or in rupture. For me, it's particularly the case for telco #API topic, which is leveraging the value of the #network for differentiating services, which can happen mainly when you #own the network. Industry efforts over the past two years have focused on CAMARA Project, an open source project at The Linux Foundation, to define new network APIs that can both #retrieve information from the network and #configure the network. The initial focus of CAMARA, supported by the Open Gateway GSMA initiative, was on APIs that leverage mobile connectivity. However, from a paradigm perspective, we expect this approach to evolve towards both #fixed and #mobile to fully support the promise of programmable networks. As a first step, there are a few fixed APIs such as home device QoD or CPE, but it is true that the majority of APIs are for mobile, probably related to the fact that the effort is mainly done in the GSMA. Orange supports a coherent approach at the #standardisation level to address the end-to-end capabilities of connectivity - both fixed and mobile. We also believe that enterprise contributions to the open source project will help #prioritise the APIs that have the most #impact for the #developer communities. We have demonstrated in the last months, including for MWC, implementations based on SIM swap, number verification, quality on demand, device location, geofencing, mainly in cases where security, and in particular fraud prevention, is a priority. In terms of #outdoor and #indoor service coverage, we believe that we need adaptable connectivity that should take into account mobility scenarios. In the case of network APIs, for example, we need to ensure that a Quality on Demand subscription can be applied to mobility scenarios from mobile to Wi-Fi and fixed. Annie, I've already booked my slot for 2025, since it looks like a recurring appointment for both of us. I got this article from my colleague Wallis D. The article reveals both, the current state with RAN Implementation in Telecom Cellular Networks, following the adoption of DevOps & Cloud-native approach in Network RAN Sub-Systems (with "SaaS" Business Model Approach rather than the Telecom "aaP" Business Model approach) & the long-lived & persisten "neglect" & lack of insights into the 3GPP RAN specifications & resistance to follow & implement the 3GPP RAN specifications (in the article, there is reference to O-RAN Alliance, rather than 3GPP, that also benefits from O-RAN Alliance specifications... that also refelects the focus & insights into the Specifications for RAN Sub-Systems). In Summary: the Problem with the O1 Interface between the SMO Platform & the RAN is that most deployed Networks are not compliant with these O-RAN Alliance Specs. A "workaround" proposed by Ericsson involves linking its SMO Platform to another Vendor's EMS via an Interface called OSSii, which predates the O-RAN Alliance by several years. Imperfect as this sounds, it would allow Ericsson to provide some Automated Support for 3rd-Party RAN Products in a Telco Network,..in the field of Management SW... In the World of Proprietary Interfaces, this is generally known as the Element Management System (EMS) & is packaged with and inseparable from the RAN. With open RAN, the EMS gives way to a Service & Management Orchestration (SMO) Platform. Through the O1 Interface, a Telco should be able to pair an SMO Platform from one (1) Vendor with Baseband SW from another. Thanks to that OSSii workaround, Ericsson believes it can also use R1 to run Apps on a 3rd-Party RAN with an old-fashioned EMS...Ericsson could boast more than 20 App Partners, including HCL SW, Infovista, Viavi & Wipro. Anyone that meets Basic Criteria to do with things. Could an App Developed for EIC be moved to a Competitor's RIC without changes? While each RIC probably demands some additional effort on Testing & Verification, various Developers say they have not had to alter the Code when taking their Apps to other RICs... the Analogy some draw with the Market for Smartphone Apps, Home to just a Couple of Dominant Stores is rejected. The Power of Apple is that it can provide Access to a Vast Developer Community & Charge for the Privilege.. There is No Parallel in Network Apps, where a matchmaker would sit between just a couple of Hundred (100) App Vendors and a similar Number of Telcos. Operators, they say, could use xApps to boost Performance instead of buying more expensive Ericsson Radios. That reputation for "Not Being Completely Open" won't be easy to shake off.

Word is that 5G hasn't delivered the hoped-for return on its investment. It's easy to be unsurprised by this - 4G was already enough for reasonable quality video etc, and the other barriers to use (notably signal coverage) make 5G a nice to have rather than a compelling necessity, at least if it's only traditional quad-play services we're thinking about. Which is the point. 5G is inherently software-defined, and yet providers haven't done all they can to open up to the application layer, horizontally or vertically. This is a start: no, I don't know what innovations will come out of the resulting comms-plus-services soup but I do see the necessity to giving startups the lego bricks they need to be creative. Telcos don't really think in terms of existential threats (being nationalised/critical infrastructure and all), but if they want to address the "race to being the fattest bitpipe" issue, APIs hold the key. In part the answer comes down to internal skills so get learning cloud native, operators. This is less about forming big alliances and more about letting the future happen. #mwc #5g #skills #telco #api

I am thankful to have connected with Dave Duggal and appreciate being able to share his expertise and knowledge in our knowledge base. "In the absence of a unified standard model for management of the networks, Telcos generally glue APIs together with imperative code and scripts, which brings the industry back to static, siloed RAN, Core and Transport domains. In effect, Telcos have replaced rigid infrastructure-bound networks with tightly-coupled software networks, which is why Lego™-like interoperability and agility remain elusive and NetOps automation and AI initiatives fall short of expectations." #databases #telco #graphdatabase #automation EnterpriseWeb https://lnkd.in/gG77JbYK

Why TADSummit Matters More than Ever https://lnkd.in/e-aX2tFk TADSummit is the thought-leadership event in programmable communications / telecoms for over one decade. Over ten years ago I pointed out that #Telecom #API standards (#OneAPI) made no sense, that the approach being taken by the telecom industry was not going to be successful. I was one of a few voices pointing this out, many telecom executives told me I was wrong. History showed I was correct, all the companies using open source, simple APIs focused on developer needs (no standards), and being lean were successful. Perhaps overly successful given what’s happening in SMS recently, and we’ll cover those issues at TADSummit, as well as in a 5 part series focused on #A2P #SMS #truth And here we are again with #Camara, #shills and #sycophants are lining up with no credible experience or ability in programmable telecoms to mislead telcos into spending #billions. Don't do it! Sort out the mess of #SMS #spam and #robocalling first. Customers are paying for those degraded services. Telcos keep an eye on #Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google, they are taking over your business directly with enterprises. #NaaS (Network as a Service) is mature, check with your fixed broadband colleagues, 5G APIs are niche. #realitycheck TADSummit's agenda is simple as it always has: Truth in Telecoms. More progress from Nokia pushing the commercialization of network APIs forward.
One of network APIs' many hurdles is breaking through the early "chicken or the egg" stage. By this I mean mobile operators are hesitant to make firm commitments without application developer support, while the developers are cautious until there is more operator support. Nokia is doing some of the heavy lifting in building the ecosystem to overcome this challenge as its recent announcement with Bounteous x Accolite shows. More agreements like this are needed to move the market forward. #Nokia #NetworkAPIs #CAMARA https://lnkd.in/gN9jisZe
