Is there something you want to know about working with First Nations people, but you've never known who or how to ask? The First Nations Circus and Physical Theatre Circle is gathering on Wurundjeri Country this weekend and we want to hear your burning questions about collaborating with First Peoples in Circus and Physical Theatre spaces. This survey will take about 15 minutes. This survey has been designed for non-First Nations people engaged in the CaPT sector who are seeking to be better allies and/or feel more empowered in making culturally safe spaces for mob, now and into the future. The results will be used to highlight gaps in knowledge/points of pressure in the sector and drive conversation with our First Nations Circle on how we might help to fill those gaps. Take the survey now: https://bit.ly/4euAIo0

🎭 What kind of leadership do we need in the theatre of the future? On Saturday I had the opportunity to reflect on this question with European theatre makers from the Mitos21 network at the Thalia Theatre. Against a backdrop of political upheaval, fundamental questions about funding, an impending generational change in the audience, or unresolved questions about the realisation of diversity, cultural participation, or sustainability, theatres, and their employees, ensemble members, and dramaturges need orientation. But how is this possible at a time when the leadership model itself is being questioned in many places? Here are three key insights: 💡 Leadership must succeed in giving theatres autonomy and room for manoeuvre in a complex environment with sometimes contradictory expectations from many stakeholders (e.g. politics, the arts scene, the media, sponsors, etc.). This requires skillful stakeholder management and discourses that help to reflect on mutual expectations and to balance them as far as possible in the interests of the theatre. 💡 Leadership is responsible for mediating and integrating the internal structural tensions between artistic and non-artistic departments. A first step in this direction is to open up their local rationalities and make them discussable. 💡 Leadership must ensure that organisational design becomes an issue in the theatre. The structures of the theatre have a strong influence on the artistic work. At best, they support it. Organisational design requires knowledge, time, resources, and legitimacy. 🚀 I'm looking forward to talking with anyone interested in these exciting topics! #organisationaldesign #culturalmanagement #structures https://mitos21.com/#1

I was fortunate enough to be awarded the Stuart and Normal Leslie Churchill Fellowship (2023) Winston Churchill Trust (Australia), which allowed me to embark on an incredible research trip earlier this year across Chile, the United States, and the United Kingdom. My research focused on how to create extraordinary professional ‘public theatre’ with, for and by community. During my travels, I had the privilege of working with and learning from leading theatre companies, particularly examining large-scale public theatre initiatives such as the Public Theatre's Public Works Program in New York and the National Theatre's Public Acts in London. Additionally, my research explores the significant impact of smaller theatre company initiatives like Woolly Mammoth in Washington and Common Wealth in the UK - who create exceptional theatre works, deeply rooted in community engagement. The report I have written advocates for the expansion of community-engaged theatre within professional spaces in Australia, drawing on successful international models. It highlights the profound cultural and social benefits that such practices can bring, and offers strategic insights into how these successes can be adapted to different cultural contexts within our own country. The findings emphasize the transformative power of theatre as a catalyst for societal engagement and sectoral evolution. It also speaks to a proposed model of working which I believe holds great potential for Australia, blending the strengths of both large and small-scale endeavours. I am deeply committed to opening up a dialogue on how we can break down structural and financial barriers to make the performing arts more accessible, create improved pathways for artistic creation, and support theatre companies in diversifying and becoming more inclusive. This research is a step toward fostering informed practices in these areas. My report is in the link below. Very excited to share. #winstonchurchilltrust

“Let’s get on with it! Time for action!” Video 3 out of 12 is about finding the time for action. Yes, it is great to listen, consult and plan. However, having a very tangible project to get on with, means hands on learning. I see massive leaps forward when we get out of the ‘classroom’ and action the Access. By putting Access into practice in any form, you can see where existing skills can be harnessed and notice the gaps that need to be addressed. In Dec 2023, I helped to run a relaxed performance. No amount of training and briefings could replace the learnings we got from ‘doing’ the work. As all the teams swung into action and collaborated, they quickly saw the benefits of their work, as new customers accessed the venue and the art for the first time. Even this week, I am seeing the benefit of “getting on with it,” as team members run creative captions for the first time, with BSL and audio description events running concurrently. If we let perfection be our North Star, we may never get started. Mistakes are made, but that is amazing learning. We capture the feedback, we learn, we go again, and we do better. Have you ever leaped ahead and reaped the benefits of action to create the momentum you need? #AlwaysOnAccess #TimeForAction #Theatre #Accessibility #ArtKind Video ID: Paul is facing the camera, sat on a grey sofa, wearing a black t-shirt. The words “time for action” are visable in the top left corner of the video. Captions are visible throughout.
