We #acknowledge the #potential of AI to reboot #newsroom workflows and operations but also raise concerns #around issues like bias, #privacy and data #protection in the AI value chain. There is need for internal #discussions in #newsrooms on how best to use these #tools without #sacrificing the foundational #journalistic values like accuracy, honest, truth, transparency and #accountability. 🚨The rise of fake news has become a major global issue, fueled in part by the rapid advancement of AI technology. 🤖 AI-generated content, such as deepfakes, is increasingly being used to spread disinformation, as seen in the recent case of a deepfake video of Taylor Swift falsely endorsing Donald Trump. 💫According to Deep Media, the volume of both video and voice deepfakes has surged significantly. There has been a 3x increase in video deepfakes and an 8x surge in voice Deepfakes from 2022 to 2023. 📈Based on the trend, VPNRanks predicts that by 2025, the volume of deepfakes could exceed 1.5 million globally, playing a significant role in the increase of fake news. Indeed, this insight about influence campaigns extends all the way back to the Biblical times, when ancient Israel found itself in cycles of reward and punishment due to its leaders' decisions to cyclically obey and stray away from God's commands. In a more contemporary context, voters or citizens in most societies tend to reward lawmakers who stay true to their principles in their advocacy for causes in the national interest. On the other hand, voters or citizens in most socities tend to distrust, become apathetic to, or become more polarized when their lawmakers seem to even appear to be subjected to influence from foreign governments. The lawmakers then find it difficult to recover that trust from their constituency; and, in a sense, such is the conundrum that most democracies are in today.

What kind of disclosure do people expect when media organizations use #AI? What could contribute to building trust and what kind of transparency could potentially undermine it? And how does the media coverage of AI shape public perceptions of it? Super relevant questions this formidable and diverse group discussed yesterday - based on lots of relevant research. Thanks for convening it, Amy Mitchell and team of the Center for News, Technology & Innovation - CNTI.
Thomson was proud to co-host the "AI Disclosure Models for News: A Practical & Nuanced Approach" convening with Center for News, Technology & Innovation - CNTI on Wednesday in Brussels. The event brought together experts in journalism, technology, and policy to explore how best to inform the public about the use of AI in news and strengthen transparency. The discussions covered essential questions around trust, accountability and effective disclosure practices, setting the stage for industry-wide advancements. By fostering this conversation with CNTI, Thomson continues its mission to support a journalism sector that remains resilient, innovative, and committed to serving the public’s need for trustworthy news. #AIinJournalism #Transparency #EthicalAI

Post Quirk's Media London reflection: After being immersed in conversations and talks during the two days and reading many thought-provoking posts on LinkedIn, the conference was distilled into one word for me: partnership. - The partnership between AI and human intuition seems to be the ideal formula moving forward. When combined, they create a dynamic duo that can delve deeper into the intricacies of human behaviour and preferences. - The partnership between synthetic data and primary research is likely a plausible way to augment sampling, especially in niche and under-sampled segments. - The partnership between agencies and insight teams pushes the boundaries in our quest to comprehend and respect the human experience to build deeper, more meaningful connections. I really quite like that. I’d love to hear your thoughts! #marketresearch #conversationalai Phil Sutcliffe Josh Seltzer Lara Schefers
