Every year on 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝐭𝐡, 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐲 is celebrated in Thailand to honor the country’s young people and recognize their potential to shape the nation’s future. The day coincides with the birthdays of two significant Thai kings: 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐚𝐦𝐚 𝐕 & 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐚𝐦𝐚 𝐈𝐗, both champions of youth empowerment and education. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐃𝐨 𝐖𝐞 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐲? This day is a reminder of the crucial role that youth play in society. It focuses on: * 𝑬𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒈 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 to contribute to national development and social change. * 𝑯𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒆𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏, 𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 in building a stronger and more prosperous Thailand. * 𝑬𝒏𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒉 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 in areas such as politics, entrepreneurship, environmental conservation, and social work. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐬 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝? Across Thailand, various events and initiatives are organized to engage young people and celebrate their achievements:  1) 𝑬𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒔 & 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔: Schools and universities host activities that foster creativity, innovation, and leadership. 2) 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒉 𝑨𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒔 & 𝑺𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒂𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑𝒔: Recognizing outstanding achievements in academics, sports, community service, and entrepreneurship.  3) 𝑽𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒆𝒓 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒔: Encouraging youth to participate in community development, environmental conservation, and social outreach programs.  4) 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒉 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒔: Platforms where young people can share ideas, collaborate, and discuss key issues affecting their future. With nearly two-thirds of Indonesia's population being young individuals, their input is crucial in creating #policies that match the aspirations of the next generation. Youth #involvement is #key, especially given the challenges they face, like unemployment. Despite their qualifications, many struggle to find stable jobs. That's why initiatives promoting youth employment and #entrepreneurship have emerged to tackle these issues. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗮❜𝘀 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 Engaging youth in Malaysia is more important than ever. With 45% of our population under 25 years old, the potential for dynamic change and progress is immense. However, this demographic needs our support to harness their full potential. Here’s why: * Demographic Dividend: By 2030, Malaysia's youth population is projected to reach over 11 million. This "demographic dividend" can drive economic growth if harnessed effectively. * Unemployment Rate: Youth unemployment stands at 10.8%, highlighting the need for targeted initiatives to provide job opportunities and skills training. * Education Disparity: Despite high enrollment rates, 20% of Malaysian youth are not in employment, education, or training (NEET). Integrating education with job market needs is essential. * Mental Health: A 2019 survey revealed that 1 in 5 Malaysian youths face mental health issues, emphasizing the need for support systems and engagement activities. Recommended Actions: * Enhance Stakeholder Engagement: Foster collaboration among ministries, NGOs, and student groups to create unified strategies for youth development. * Increase Budget Allocation: Advocate for more funding for impactful youth initiatives that provide real benefits, such as job training and mental health support. * Integrate Programs: Establish frameworks to reduce redundancies in youth programs, ensuring resources are used efficiently and effectively. * Develop a Communication Strategy: Rebuild public trust through transparent and consistent communication about youth policies and initiatives. * Support Local Initiatives: Provide funding and training for grassroots organizations that directly engage and empower young people in their communities. On the 23rd of July in 2024, Widyawiyata Local Project Summer Peak 2024 by AIESEC I'm Unila organized an impactful session "Local Heroes: Empowering Youth through Teaching". It took place at two prominent schools, namely Sekolah Darma Bangsa and Sekolah Global Madani. This endeavor sought to tackle pressing issues in character education, delving into topics such as Brawl, Bullying, Drugs, Sexual Harassment, and School Dropout. Drawing an audience of 55 engaged Local Participants, as well as several dedicated members of the Organizing Committee (OC) from Widyawiyata, this session set out to cultivate a deeper awareness and insight into the challenges surrounding character education faced by the youth. By fostering open discussions and creating a space for critical thinking, the event served as a platform for participants to share perspectives and collectively devise actionable solutions to address these complex problems. Moreover, at the heart of the session was the endeavor to harness the creative potential of children, with the ultimate goal of generating actionable ideas and solutions that would inspire tangible steps towards creating a more positive and nurturing school environment. [Reforming the Malaysia Matriculation Pre-U Program through PADU] My op-ed on how we can further leverage PADU to create more equitable society for Malaysia Key Summary💡 1️⃣ The matriculation program now needs a system reboot and reform in order to realign to its original intention: bridging education inequality gap. The system can no longer assume that bumiputera or rural communities belong to the lower income group. It needs a new identification and analytics system to determine who is from the low income group, then prioritising their children in the program enrolment. 2️⃣ What tools are available to the government in order to target precisely without any prejudice, the mentioned group of people for matriculation program enrolment? The answer will certainly be PADU! Through data cross-linking and analysis, it can robustly populate a ranking system based on household income for those families whose children have applied the matriculation programs. With the household income ranking and students‘ SPM results within the fingertips of the government, a compiled scoring system, putting a major weightage on results but also taking into consideration the family income will be in place to select the entitled students: those who need a boost in their economic capital in completing tertiary education, to enter the matriculation program. 3️⃣ Do not feel surprised if PADU household income ranking system is used, bumiputera, typically those from Sabah and Sarawak inland area will be the biggest beneficiary group. At the end of the day matriculation might be filled up by even more bumiputera, exceeding the 90% limit set. But this is exactly how it should happen: let data do the work, pin-point the communities that really need the economic capital boost, and bridge the education inequality gap. Sharing [Opportunities] ASEAN Youth Convergence is an event for ASEAN youths, jointly organised by 2 intergovernmental organisations - Mekong Institute and ASEAN Foundation. I usually space out my posts, but this opportunity is closing soon and quite a bit of preparation is needed (3 essays + personal documents). Here are the criteria: - Aged 19 to 35 - Citizen of an ASEAN Member State - Full-time student, fresh graduate, or professional - With a demonstrated interest in regional cooperation, youth leadership, or women empowerment - Available to attend the event in Vientiane, Lao PDR, from May 19 to 22, 2024 - Committed to attend an online pre-departure meeting on May 13, 2024 (tentative), and participate in other pre-departure and post-event activities. I have not had the chance to participate in such events, but i think the intergovernmental nature of this event will expose you to different conversations (and most certainly, friends).
