At Youth Conference Bali 2024, 100 young women and men, all winners of our most recent wikithon, met with policymakers from 18 different provincial government agencies, the Traditional Village Council, the Denpasar City Regional Planning Agency (Bappeda) and 50 teachers. Together, the participants identified priority issues from the perspective of young people and agreed on a public participation methodology that prioritizes youth voices. The methodology builds on BASAibu (BASAbali)'s wikithons and local language digital platform. The Conference was momentus because it brought young people and policymakers together at the invitation of a Balinese grassroots youth organization. It was also notable because Conference participants successfully reached consensus on a public participation methodology and the majority of the young people attending the Conference were women. The Conference marked one of the first times that modern government administrators met with traditional leaders in the same physical space. Sumpah Pemuda, or the Youth Pledge, is a significant event in Indonesian history, celebrated annually on October 28. The origins of this day trace back to 1928 during the Second Indonesian Youth Congress held in Batavia (now Jakarta). At this congress, young Indonesian nationalists from various regions and ethnic backgrounds gathered to discuss their aspirations for Indonesia's future. The primary aim was to unite the Indonesian youth in their struggle for independence from colonial rule. On October 28, they issued a pledge that emphasized three key points: 1. **One motherland**: Indonesia. 2. **One nation**: the Indonesian nation. 3. **One language**: the Indonesian language. This pledge marked a crucial moment of solidarity among the youth, fostering a sense of national identity that transcended regional and ethnic divisions. The Sumpah Pemuda is considered a foundational moment in Indonesia's journey toward independence, which was eventually achieved in 1945. Today, Sumpah Pemuda is commemorated as a day to celebrate youth and their role in nation-building, reflecting on the ideals of unity and nationalism that continue to resonate in contemporary Indonesia. Various events, ceremonies, and educational activities are held to honor this pivotal moment in the nation's history.

Eight new projects funded by the Polson Institute for Global Development will promote research and teaching at the intersection of systemic inequality and social-environmental justice. The newly funded projects address complex global challenges through collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches — from globally engaged learning and network building to climate change case studies and critical analyses of urgent environmental challenges. While some grants build upon former success in the institute, such as sending graduate student researchers to collaborate with the International Potato Center in Ghana, other grants build upon existing relationships with the department’s global community, such as optimizing value chains of shea butter in partnership with recent Humphrey Fellow from Uganda. Recognizing that there is no existing structure for feminist scholars at Cornell to unite, one project proposed the creation of the Feminist Research for EquitablE Development (FREED) Collective, which will provide a space for researchers and students to analyze feminist theory and practice in development.
