🚗 A Crash Course in the Automotive Industry continues – From EV Markets to Automechanika! 🚗 My deep dive into the automotive world just keeps getting more interesting! Last week, I had the chance to attend Automechanika Frankfurt, a massive event that brought together 4,200 exhibitors from 80 countries, welcoming international visitors from across the automotive aftermarket—workshops, industry professionals, and trade experts. 🌍🔧 Fun fact: Nearly 900 visitors from Finland attended—8% more than in 2022. It’s clear the aftermarket is thriving, and personal connections remain vital in this industry. Some key takeaways from the event (besides the impressive amount of spare parts): 📊 Data, Analytics & Platforms: While data and systems have become central in many industries, this event seemed very product-focused. There’s still plenty of room for growth in how data and digital platforms are used in the automotive aftermarket. 🚘 Chinese Cars: Even though it was a spare parts fair, Chinese EV manufacturers were highly visible, with nearly a whole hall dedicated to their future driven vehicles. 🎤 Keynotes & Industry Leaders: While there was a strong focus on products, I would have loved to hear more about the future of the industry, especially around key topics like sustainability. Given its growing importance, it could be worth dedicating an entire keynote stage to sustainability in the coming years, as the automotive sector shifts towards greener practices. 🏭 Scale: The sheer volume of products and manufacturers was staggering—12 massive halls packed with spare parts. 🍻 After Hours: And, of course, no German event would be complete without Brezels and beer! The evenings were just as full of energy and connection as the day’s events. I’m excited to continue this journey in such a dynamic and evolving field. Last week I had the opportunity to visit The European Networking Group 's 16th Annual #VehicleRemarketing summit at the Meliá Hotels International in Berlin. Having one week to digest a bit, I would like to share my 5 key take aways from the conference: 1️⃣ The current discount battle for #BEVs initiated by Tesla is shaking up the industry and leads to considerable #RV depreciation if #Captives & #VaaS providers do not act smartly 2️⃣ There is a renaissance of #PreSales and #buybacks as #Captives & #VaaS providers aim to minimize the #RV risk exposure in their balance sheets, instead of leveraging #usedcarsales as cash cow (as it has been the case in recent years) 3️⃣ Expanding into 2nd & 3rd #usecycle (e.g. via #UCleasing, #UCsubscrptions) has become reality for many industry players, instead of a strategic vision of some consultancies... 4️⃣ #Crossbordersales are standard and large #remarkting providers/ #eCommerce platforms sell 40-60% of their used cars #PanEuropean to realize arbitrage effects, but also to protect prices in domestic markets. 5️⃣ #ReFurbishment is on a raise as more and more #Captives & #VaaS providers acknowledge that it is a key underlying enabler for multicycle sales models and to increase #vehiclelifetimevalues Christopher Ley, Tobias Detzler & Philipp Enderle what is your opinion about these findings? What an incredible experience at Automotive Management Live 2024! The event was a brilliant chance to reconnect with so many valued partners, suppliers, and industry peers. It was fantastic to catch up face-to-face, share updates, and exchange ideas about the latest challenges and opportunities in the automotive sector. The workshops and panel discussions were another highlight. From sessions on digital transformation and stock management to exploring emerging technologies, it was great to hear from industry experts about the new strategies and tools available to help dealers thrive. The insights shared were thought-provoking, and I’m already looking forward to seeing how we can apply some of these ideas to support our network of dealers in maximising sales and achieving greater efficiency.
