Today is World Diabetes Day and I am lucky to have attended the State of Diabetes event this morning, hosted by the American Diabetes Association. I was able to get my A1c checked and connected with like minded individuals who are all-in on ways that we can partner to advance more affordable care options. The discussion today focused on obesity, diabetes, and the total cost of care. Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects millions of people worldwide, with over 34 million Americans that have diabetes and another 88 million who have prediabetes. This means that almost half of the US population is at risk for developing this condition. The good news is that with proper education and management, diabetes can be controlled and even prevented. Today we focused on the challenges faced by employees, employers, and the work place when it comes to managing this disease. Our goal is to create awareness about diabetes and provide practical solutions for better work place wellness. By educating the public about the risk factors, symptoms, and management strategies, we can empower individuals to make informed lifestyle choices and seek early diagnosis and treatment. This includes promoting healthy eating habits, regular physical activity, and access to healthcare services for all members of society. With more than 1 out of every 14 people affected globally, diabetes stands as one of the most prevalent health conditions worldwide. Its implications reach far beyond the management of blood sugar levels; diabetes can lead to severe complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, blindness, and nerve damage. In the UK alone, over 5 million individuals are currently living with diabetes.
