One Grape & Wine Sector Plan Unveiled at 2024 Wine Industry Update 🍇 Australian Grape & Wine and Wine Australia have introduced the One Grape & Wine Sector Plan at the Wine Industry Update 2024 in Adelaide. This strategic initiative aims to bolster the sector's recovery and outlines a clear path for a prosperous future. The plan integrates the sector's goals with Vision 2050, emphasizing the resilience and commitment to overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities. 📈 Australian Grape & Wine CEO Lee McLean highlighted the extensive consultations that shaped the plan, gathering insights from grapegrowers, winemakers, exporters, and industry stakeholders. We are delighted to announce a new viticulture research programme to boost New Zealand vineyard productivity. Vineyard profitability is key to ensuring a thriving New Zealand wine industry. As costs continue to rise, we must adapt and innovate to remain profitable. A new research programme led by Bragato Research Institute has been designed to address these challenges. The programme, called Next Generation Viticulture, will research growing vines to be more efficient at turning sunlight into grapes, reducing growers’ input cost per unit of output. “The programme’s vision is to increase the profitability of the New Zealand wine industry by improving vineyard productivity, reducing variability in yields, while delivering exceptional quality New Zealand wines the world demands,” says New Zealand Winegrowers Chair Clive Jones. The announcement was made following the signing of a new partnership between the Ministry for Primary Industries, New Zealand Winegrowers, and seven wine business co-investors contributing cash and in-kind. 'Farmer Angus is a project within the Spier portfolio. The wines come from vineyards that have been under regenerative viticulture protocols for 15 years and have been farmed organically for most of that time. Regenerative viticulture is not simply the latest buzzword in the world of wine, nor is it only about carbon footprint (though the Farmer Angus wines are actually carbon negative). New wave in the wine industry- prowein24. Running from prowein last week to vineyards around the region this week I have only shared first impressions of the show that finished. Here are some more elaborated points: - Fresh wines are sought for - Whites have already taken over reds - Second gen winemakers in their 30s are on the scene - All of this paves the way for a change in the industry - Climate is a concern - fresh wines do not come from warmer spots - Sustainability is important - but with no sales not so much - Buyer structure is different - Russia is missing fully - Vineyards in cooler spots - a difficult ask With all of this in mind, I have seen a number of producers doubling down on reds, particularly from places where this has been a tradition, such as Spain. Despite that Spain has had the best appearance on the show, in my opinion. p.s. I am somehow thinking we will be blanc de noirs a bit more p.p.s. View the newly released 2023 Certification Report and Appendix, an annual benchmark of the major accomplishments of Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing (CCSW) and certified vineyards and wineries at the link below. The report notes that 45% of California’s 610,000 winegrape acres are CCSW certified and that 90% of the 255 million statewide cases of wine are made in CCSW wineries.
