Major news from the Virginia Society of CPAs today about their plans to introduce legislation in 2025 that adds a pathway to becoming a Virginia CPA that does not require 150-credit hours of higher education. This follows an exposure draft from AICPA & NASBA (released on Sept. 12th) that proposes adding a "competency-based experience pathway" as an alternative to the 150-hour requirement. https://lnkd.in/e7Zmi35C While there are still many questions about if & how these proposed paths will be executed, it certainly seems that tide is shifting in regard to the future of the 150-hour requirement. #accountingstudents #CPA #accountingeducation
After two years of reviewing our options, the VSCPA intends to introduce legislation in 2025 to add a pathway for licensure that does not require 150 hours of education. In 2022, the VSCPA 150-hour Task Force said that “the 150-hour requirement is not working for the profession,” and asked the VSCPA to work with our colleagues nationally to find a solution. We feel we are in a position to act now. Our proposal will include language intended to ensure continued practice mobility for out-of-state CPAs practicing in Virginia as well as the addition of a licensure pathway requiring passage of the CPA Exam, a baccalaureate degree with an accounting concentration, and two years of experience. For more information, see the message linked below sent to VSCPA members last week. We are working with the Virginia Society of CPAs board and the VBOA - Virginia Board of Accountancy on further details, so stay tuned for more. Please reach out to me or Emily Walker, CAE with feedback or questions. https://lnkd.in/e3TfK-JZ

Another great time sharing the possibilities that the CPA profession holds for incoming accountants this morning! Tipton High School accounting class has 29 students! I got to present how incredible our profession is & break the stereotypes of what it means to be a CPA. Thank you Iowa Society of CPAs and AICPA for making it easy to present to HS students! #AccountingOpportunitiesExperience #NextGenISCPA #FindMyPath #FutureAccountants #AccountantsAreFun #CPA #AccountingPipeline

Several readers have asked me my thoughts on the proposal by AICPA and NASBA to add a bachelor's degree plus two years of experience pathway to CPA licensing. I support the idea, not the proposed implementation of a "structured learning program" for the second year. In addition to being ineffective, it will present another opportunity for cheating. CPAs have been found to cave to the temptation to cheat on ethics exams. If experience counts, just count the hours worked or billed. I'm quoted in Marc Joffe's blog on the topic. You can find a link to the exposure draft there also. #NASBA, #AICPA
Great to see AICPA and NASBA propose an experiential alternative to graduate school for aspiring CPAs, but the process for validating the second year of experience seems unnecessarily bureaucratic.

Given the shortage of CPAs we are all facing in the profession I am honestly shocked that more of us are not giving bigger amounts to this cause. I am sad to say I myself am not on this list 🤦🏽♂️ so I am resolving that right now and have just given $1,000 to the ASCPA Foundation. We should be supporting more than 400 students since 1990 that is 34 years!! We should be supporting 100 students each year that should be our goal! If you are a CPA practicing in AZ I highly encourage you to match my contribution so we can have a much bigger impact on giving scholarships and support to students as they go on their accounting and CPA journey. Don’t complain about the problem if you aren’t willing to take steps to correct the issue. This is a simple way to take a big step to help move things in the right direction. Specifically I am calling out my fellow Arizona Society of CPAs board members we need to step it up on this one we all gave to the PAC we need to at least give as much to the Foundation but hopefully we can double that $500 PAC contribution and give $1,000 each and Lead The Way!! Please also keep in mind the Foundation is a 501c3 so the contribution is tax deductible if you itemize on your taxes so why not share some of that love you donate each year to the profession you love! ❤️ 😁👍🏾🙌🏾👏🏾 Hopefully next year this post is 10 pages long!! Please share this post or post a similar post in your own words so we can get more reach on this effort.
Since 1990, the Foundation has supported over 400 students on their journey to the accounting profession and the CPA exam. Without the generosity of people like you, we would not be able to continue this legacy of giving. Thank you to the top contributors who gave to the Foundation in 2023:

3wNCACPA, this is such an inspiring initiative—huge kudos to everyone involved in bringing CPA opportunities to high school classrooms! Highlighting the diverse career paths within accounting is a great way to get students excited about the field, and it makes me think about how we can do something similar in the insurance industry. Insurance is often overlooked by younger generations, yet it offers a wide range of career possibilities—from underwriting and risk analysis to client advisory and tech innovations. Efforts like these could really help us reframe the narrative and show students how rewarding it is to work in an industry that impacts people's lives in meaningful ways. I’m curious: How do you see educational initiatives like this influencing other industries, such as insurance, where attracting and nurturing a pipeline of new talent is vital? I would love to hear your thoughts!
