Many clients have asked us recently whether hydrogen combustion engines could be how hydrogen-powered road transport goes mainstream. The answer is no. My colleague Maynie Yang gives two reasons why in her latest Commercial Vehicles Decarbonization Monthly. 1: Efficiency. Hydrogen combustion vehicles are (even) less efficient than fuel cell vehicles, requiring three to four times as much energy to travel the same distance as a battery-electric vehicle. This means that hydrogen combustion engine trucks may be even more expensive to fuel than fuel cell variants. 2: Refueling: #Hydrogen #combustion trucks would face a similar #refueling challenge as #fuelcell ones, where hydrogen refueling infrastructure needs to be set up from scratch. That said, the companies developing this technology (some of which are pictured below) aren't all crazy. There are regulatory and manufacturing reasons why hydrogen combustion trucks could still occupy a niche market. BloombergNEF users can read about these reasons by viewing the full report here: https://lnkd.in/euac2KvF

A demonstration vehicle like the H2Rescue prototype truck showcases the capabilities of using zero-emissions hydrogen, rather than diesel, for power. Hydrogen as a power source: Supports long-range applications with heavy-duty work cycles, like heavy-duty trucks, dump trucks, buses and rail systems Generates little to no noise Provides zero-emissions power, with water and steam as the only byproducts, making it a key solution for reducing transportation pollution
