East Midlands Funeral Directors Supports Launch of UK’s First ‘Uncollected Ashes’ Database A.W. Lymn The Family Funeral Service, is the first funeral director in the UK to address the lack of formal regulation of uncollected ashes in the industry They have uploaded information of all cremated remains in its possession since before 2000 to Ashes Registry Ltd, a new initiative designed to map the location of ashes. A total of 136 ashes have been uploaded to the online database by A.W. Lymn, with the oldest dating back to 1952. Amongst this list also includes decorated veteran, Air Commodore George Lawson CBE MC. Uncollected ashes have been a longstanding challenge in the funeral industry, with an estimated hundreds of thousands of unclaimed urns sitting in funeral homes across the UK, some of which date back to the 19 th century. In the immediate aftermath of a funeral, it is the funeral director’s duty of care to look after the ashes. Stored in a locked room called a Columbarium, they are kept safe until whoever made the funeral arrangements is ready to collect them, with records kept in paper format as well as electronically centrally. Explaining why ashes are then left in the possession of funeral directors for decades, Matthew Lymn Rose, Managing Director and fifth generation at A.W. Lymn, said: “It’s a saddening thought to think of ashes that have been left uncollected, however there are many reasons why this might occur. “Sometimes, in the aftermath of a funeral, people can be in denial and taking possession of the ashes can be a hard thing to do. In other instances, there is a breakdown in communication amongst a family as to who will collect them. As ashes do not belong to anyone under British law, unless the person who made the funeral arrangements collects them, they go unclaimed.” National Association Of Funeral Directors (NAFD) recommends its members store ashes for at least five years, with efforts being made to locate the rightful recipient before a funeral company can dispose of them. On why A.W. Lymn have held onto cremated remains for so many years, Matthew said: “As a fifth- generation family business that has been supporting the bereaved in the region for nearing 120 years, we feel a deep sense of responsibility and duty of care to look after cremated remains in our possession, in the hope that they will one day find their way back to someone. “We do however strongly believe that everyone deserves a final resting place, which is why we are so passionate about this new register. We hope that by leading the way in adding our records, other funeral directors will follow suit and it will become best practice within the industry, hopefully aiding in reducing the number of uncollected ashes stored at funeral branches across the country.” Eden Public Relations #respect #dignity #bereavement

My colleagues have assured me that this trend is increasingly common, highlighting a more competitive landscape. Understanding these changes has been crucial for our ongoing growth and ability to thoughtfully and transparently meet families' needs. 2. But they don't have the coffin that my 'Mother' would have wanted It's completely understandable to want something that reflects your mother's wishes and personality. The right time to express your concerns is during a consultation, ideally when discussing options. You can say something like, “I don’t feel these coffins truly represent what my mother would have wanted.” This opens up a dialogue for them to show you alternatives that might be more fitting. Even then, they still don't have anything I like If none of the options resonate with you, it’s perfectly okay to let the funeral director know. You might say something like, “I appreciate your suggestions, but I’m not seeing anything that feels right for my mother.” They can often help you explore custom options or suggest alternatives that align more closely with what you have in mind. It’s important that you feel good about the choices you’re making. .What should I do to find a suitable coffin, consider these steps: Research: Look online for coffin options and styles that reflect your mother’s personality. Websites of funeral homes or specialized retailers can provide inspiration. Visit Multiple Funeral Homes: If possible, visit different funeral homes to see their selections. Each may have unique options. Ask About Custom Options: Some funeral homes allow for customization. You could design something that truly represents her. Consider Personal Touches: Think about adding personal elements, like her favorite colors or materials. Consult with Family: Talk to family members to gather ideas and ensure that everyone’s sentiments are considered. Check Online Retailers: Some websites specialize in coffins and may offer more variety than local funeral homes. Budget Considerations: Determine your budget ahead of time to narrow down your options while still considering what feels right. Taking your time to find something meaningful is important.

In 2021, during a period where opportunities were scarce, an intriguing offer surfaced. I was approached by a marketing agency focusing exclusively on funeral homes. Initially hesitant due to the somber nature of the industry, my perspective shifted when I was granted full creative control over my content, with the mandate to integrate just four consistent keywords for each client. 🖊️ The Task This opportunity offered not only an impressive rate but also complete creative freedom with just a few stipulations—the inclusion of four consistent keywords tailored specifically for each funeral home. Thrust into this unique market, I found myself writing four blogs a month for each of the eight funeral homes we serviced. That's 32 blogs a month, each requiring tact, empathy, and a deep understanding of the reader's emotional state. 🎢 The Challenges Confronting the themes of death and grief was no small feat. My own discomfort with these subjects stood as a barrier I had to overcome. However, this role demanded resilience and a deep dive into the sensitive world of loss: -Understanding Grief: I explored and relayed the nuances of the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. -Supporting the Bereaved: Learning to articulate comfort and support became my forte, ensuring the bereaved felt understood and less alone. -Funeral Etiquette and More: From appropriate attire to funeral etiquette, and managing the logistics from the initial news to the wake, my blogs served as a guide to those navigating their darkest times. -Practical Advice: I demystified processes such as cremation and provided insights on budgeting for funerals, offering tangible help in addition to emotional support. ℹ️ Growth and Insight With each blog post written and every bit of research done, my understanding deepened, not only about the industry but also about human emotions during times of profound loss.
