The text revisits the philosophy that games exist primarily as potential—static until players breathe life into them. 🧝♂️👩🎤 📍Ultima’s open-world structure, detailed backstories and the high stake moral choices required players to invest emotionally and intellectually, making each interaction unique. That’s the dream, isn't it? To craft experiences so engaging that they leave an imprint, compelling players to return, and eventually contribute to the game’s legacy through forums, fan fiction, and even game preservation. 💭 The concept that hit me the hardest? The game’s “semi-authorial to amateur archival” journey. Here the players are not just consumers but co-authors, custodians, and even archivists. As someone who's spent countless hours commuting myself, I find his approach fascinating. His realization that game ideas come from our everyday experiences, like the daily ritual of taking public transport, struck a chord. 🚌🚉 What particularly caught my attention was how he transforms the subtle, often unnoticed social dynamics of commuting into a potential game mechanic—using procedural generation to create fleeting moments of connection. Imagine trying to find the person sending you a "love connection" message on the train, a delicate balance between looking and not looking, breaking and following social rules. The gaze becomes the main mechanic. 👀💌 The way Duran blends procedural storytelling with these relatable, real-world experiences reminds me of the power of everyday interactions in game design. His use of Tracery for generating character descriptions is an inspiring technique I’m keen to explore further in my own work.
