Follow this film production safety advice to take great care of your creatives, cast, and crew. Whether produced by large production firms or smaller teams, film sets frequently have a lot of dangers that could potentially occur. Health and safety should be considered in the production process even before the cameras start shooting, regardless of the size of your team or the number of locations you’ll be in. To ensure a successful shoot, the team needs to adhere to a few film production safety guidelines, from doing a risk assessment to managing weather conditions. Here is all the information you need to know about set safety. 1. Planning and Preparation; Put safety first when you start your production. You’ll have a good shoot if you prioritize health and safety from the beginning. Safety needs to be top-of-mind for everyone every day, whether you’re a smaller crew or working on a large set with a safety manager on site. Visit the sites you’ll be filming at before you even start the project. Conduct a tech scout, often referred to as a tech recce, to inspect your filming sites and gain an understanding of the shots and techniques you’ll require. The best time to introduce safety is now. Look out for potential dangers in key locations, power sources, and emergency exits. By doing a tech scout, you can make appropriate plans to understand the health and safety requirements for your shoot. 2. Conducting a Risk Assessment; Perform a risk assessment for each filming location as you conduct your tech scout. These evaluations take place in three steps. i). Identifying Potential Hazards: Start by identifying all potential dangers in each setting or area. Anything with the potential to do harm is referred to as a ‘hazard.’ While some dangers are visible, others are not. ii). Evaluating Risk: Evaluate risk after identifying hazards. ‘Risk’ refers to the possibility that the hazard will actually cause harm. iii). Determining Safety Measures: Decide what safety precautions (or ‘safeguards’), if any, should be taken to reduce risk. Take note of and prepare for any equipment you might require to implement your safety precautions. Producers with appropriate qualifications should undertake risk analysis. The film industry also employs Safety Supervisors who have received specialized training to assist you with set safety. These supervisors offer pre-production professional advice to reduce risks. In either case, the evaluation must be included in a formal, legally binding document that is approved by every production team member. MARTIN GROVE'S HOLLYWOOD REPORT FOR 11/17/24: RED ONE didn't deliver enough green ones to help cure the boxoffice pandemic that began with JOKER 2 in October.   This weekend's only wide studio launch, Amazon/MGM Studios' PG-13 action adventure comedy RED ONE, opened #1 to $34.1M, per Comscore, at 4,032 theatres ($8,451). Produced reportedly for $250M, it was directed by Jake Kasdan (JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL) and stars Dwayne Johnson & Chris Evans. Its debut beats the $30M Hollywood handicappers were projecting Saturday, but it's still nothing for exhibs to feel good about.   Although ONE is a theatrical dud, it will likely work much better for Amazon as a streaming title with The Rock as a superstar magnet for subscriber eyes. ONE can live on for years as a Prime holiday classic -- whether it is or isn't -- for seasonal viewing as streamers doze on couches globally.   Internationally, ONE is being released by Warner Bros. and has done $50M since opening last week to avoid going head to head this weekend with Paramount's Ridley Scott heavyweight GLADIATOR II -- which ki ked off to $87M overseas.   ONE is tracking best for first choice with men over 25 (six points over norm) and next best with women over 25 (three points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics hate it at 33%, but audiences are happy at 89%.   While ONE's modest debut can’t be putting smiles on exhibitors' faces, at least they've got bodies in seats eating popcorn and other concession treats. Exhibs have to hold on until 11/22, when Universal/Marc Platt Productions' WICKED opens to what Hollywood buzzards say will be $80M or more. It's tracking best for first choice with under 25 women (13 points over norm). No scores yet on Rotten Tomatoes.   Exhibs' other big hope 11/22 is Paramount/Scott Free Productions' GLADIATOR II. Insiders expect $65M or more. It's tracking best for first choice with men over 25 (16 points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are an okay 75%.   This weekend's domestic marketplace totaled $73.6M, per Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian, up 2% from the prior weekend and down 37% vs. this time last year. Comscore's year to date tally has 2024 at $7.08B, down 11.1% from $7.97B in 2023. The previous weekend in 2024 was down 11.4% vs. 2023.   Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Sony/Marvel's VENOM: THE LAST DANCE was #2 in weekend four with $7.4M (-54%) at 3,421 theatres ($2,150). It reportedly cost $120M to produce and has done $127.6M domestic.   Lionsgate/Comworld Productions' faith-based THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER was #3 with $5.4M (-50%) at 3,020 theatres ($1,150). Best Military 6x6? Was the US M35A2 “Deuce and a half” the best military 6x6 truck of its time? The truck seen here is one of two owned by Dave Fortier. For those of you unfamiliar with the M35 series it was originally designed by the REO Motor Car Company in 1949. The series consists of a wide number of variations and specialty models with the M35A2 cargo truck the most common. This model, with winch, is 112 inches tall, 96 inches wide and 277 inches long with an empty weight of approximately 13,030 pounds. The standard bed is 8 feet by 12 feet. The Deuce is powered by a LDT 465 in-line 6 cylinder turbocharged multi-fuel engine. The 478 cubic inch engine puts out 134 bhp and 330 ft-lbs of torque. The multi-fuel engine is designed to reliably operate on a wide variety of fuels, to include diesel fuel, jet fuel, kerosene and heating oil. Even gasoline can also be used in an emergency, if motor oil is mixed in (one quart to 15 gallons) for proper injector pump lubrication. In typical military fashion the truck features a 24 volt electrical system. The Deuce normally runs on ten 9.00x20 tires and can haul 2.5 tons cross-country or 5 tons on the highway. Most trucks are fitted with an air-operated selectable transfer case. Hitting a switch on the dash engages the front axle and locks the transfer case. Brake system is air-over-hydraulic six wheel drum with a driveline parking brake, although gladhands exist on the rear of the vehicle for connection to trailers with full air service and emergency brakes. Due to this brake system and GVWR under 26,001 pounds, the deuce can be driven without a commercial driver's license outside of California. Top speed is approximately 55 to 60 mph. A 50 gallon fuel tank is standard giving the Deuce a 400-500 mile range. Accessories include a soft top, hard top, cold weather kit, engine coolant or multi-fuel fired cab heaters, cargo covers, 10,000 pound PTO winch and even .50 caliber machine gun mounts.
