Smoke from wildfires raging in northeastern British Columbia since last week has drifted into portions of the northern and central United States. Satellite-detected burning data from Opterrix reveals the rapid expansion of these fires, which have prompted evacuations in cities such as Fort Nelson. Air quality maps indicate heavy smoke levels in Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, the Dakotas, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, and Wisconsin. Further exacerbating the situation, wildfires have also ignited in Mexico, sending smoke northward. As of Tuesday afternoon, parts of southern Texas and Louisiana were experiencing heavy smoke concentrations. Canada's 2024 wildfire season is off to an alarming start, with 823 confirmed wildfires as of May 8th, significantly surpassing the 10-year average of 717. This follows a devastating 2023 season where an estimated 18.4 million hectares burned, an area roughly the size of North Dakota. --------- We can help you prepare for wildfire season. We recently tracked the Mountain Fire in Ventura County, California, 45 minutes north of Los Angeles, which shows just how unpredictable wildfires can be. Within 2 hours of ignition, this fire had exploded to cover over 23.5 mi² (58.74 km²) in a very residential area, with over 14,000 people evacuated from their homes. The fire was accelerated by a phenomenon in this area called the “Santa Ana Winds." These are dry, powerful gusts that blow from inland deserts toward the coast of Southern California. This not only increases the wildfire danger by creating drier conditions and giving plenty of oxygen for fuel, but has the potential to carry embers to other places, creating multi-front fires. Our Fire Spread simulation predicted extreme spread potential, and that is exactly what we saw. After only a couple hours, the fire had already exploded on the entire South Mountain Ridgeline and had created a second fire in the Camarillo Hills area, almost 5 miles (8 kilometers) to the south, creating a new front for firefighters. Every wildfire is different, but one thing remains constant: reliable, real-time information changes the game. Our Wildfire Solution platform has the ability to detect and predict fires, a game changer for first responders working on fires with multiple fronts. #WildfireTech #MountainFire #CaliforniaFires #Wildfire

2024-Feb-28 `Several wildfires are ravaging northern Texas thanks to dry, windy and unseasonably warm conditions in the region. On Monday, thirteen fires across Texas burned a total of 77,135 acres, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. Now, firefighters are still combatting several active fires across the Texas panhandle. The northernmost fire, named Smokehouse Creek, is at zero per cent containment as of late Tuesday afternoon and is estimated to be 200,000 acres. Meanwhile, the much smaller Windy Deuce and Grape Vine Creek fires are at 20 per cent containment, while the Juliet Pass fire is at 90 per cent... Dry and windy conditions amid unseasonably warm temperatures fuelled these fires. Drought conditions are not contributing — much of the panhandle has no drought, with just small portions of the western panhandle considered “abnormally dry” or in “moderate drought.” Winds could reach up to 65 miles per hour today, the National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts. Additional fires have continued to develop throughout Tuesday afternoon, the NWS for Amarillo, Texas said on X.` https://lnkd.in/eQYbhzhQ

When it Comes to Wildfire - We All Have a Role in Prevention The CalFire incident dashboard for 2024 is off to a hot start. 18 active wildfires across the state of California, with Napa County's #tollfire at 80% containment. Recent weather conditions show us, that this year calls for vigilant monitoring and preparedness. While Napa Firewise works behind the scenes on fuel reduction which can aid in firefighting, we can't acknowledge enough how critical the preparedness and response from our first responders was this last week. Throughout last week's red flag warning, fire stations across the county upstaffed to prepare for response if needed. Their quick response by ground and air minimized the impacts from these fires. As property owners and residents, we must all take responsibility in maintaining our properties, avoiding activities that can ignite fire during critical weather, and stay vigilant.
