The Franklin Fire has engulfed parts of Malibu, California, forcing thousands to flee their homes. The blaze, which ignited near Pepperdine University late Monday night, has exploded in size. Dry conditions, dense vegetation, and powerful Santa Ana winds fuel the fire's explosive growth. As of Wednesday morning, the fire had consumed nearly 4,000 acres and was only 7% contained. Firefighters are battling the flames on steep, rugged terrain, facing challenging conditions, including low humidity and the persistent threat of powerful wind gusts. These "sundowner winds" have been particularly problematic, pushing the fire in unpredictable directions and making it difficult to establish containment lines. 🛰️ Satellite-detected burning, proprietary data from Opterrix, shows fire growth mainly on the west and northwest sides of the fire perimeter. See it in action: Schedule a live demo today and discover how we can help you: • Pinpoint policyholder locations in active fire zones • Rapidly assess potential exposure and losses • Proactively deploy resources and support • Strengthen your wildfire response strategy Don't wait for the next wildfire. Take control with Opterrix. https://lnkd.in/eNpmD22D #Wildfire #ExposureManagement #RiskManagement

A powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California in Humboldt County this morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The quake, which hit around 10:44 a.m. local time, triggered a tsunami warning from the National Weather Service (NWS) for coastal areas. The earthquake was felt throughout much of Northern California, with residents in San Francisco reporting a rolling motion that lasted several seconds. Aftershocks followed the main quake. The USGS issued a yellow alert, indicating localized but minimal damage. An estimated 5.3 million people were within the tsunami warning zone, and over 1.3 million people were close enough to the epicenter to have felt the tremor. #Earthquake #Tsunami

The topic of Day 27 of the #30DayMapChallenge: Water. Our oceans are facing a hidden threat: microplastics. This map, based on data from NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration's NCEI, reveals the extent of the problem. Microplastics endanger marine life and disrupt delicate ecosystems like salt marshes and mangrove forests, which are crucial for healthy coastlines. #GIS #DataVisualization #MapsMatter #Cartography

For #30DayMapChallenge (Day 26: Map Projections), we explored a new perspective in Opterrix: tropical systems as seen from the North Pole! It's surprising how far north these IBTrACS best track lines (since 1990) extend. While they may transition to extra-tropical cyclones, they can still impact regions such as Iceland, Greenland, and Scandinavia! #GIS #DataVisualization #MapsMatter #Cartography
