Our latest research on Brain Metastases from Esophageal Cancer is published in World Neurosurgery! Brain metastases from esophageal cancer (BMEC) pose significant challenges due to their rarity and aggressiveness, yet optimal treatment strategies remain unclear. Our study aimed to fill this gap by systematically reviewing existing literature and analyzing our institution's patient data to assess the impact of different treatment approaches on outcomes. We conducted a thorough literature review following PRISMA guidelines and performed a retrospective analysis of our institutional experience with BMEC. Data on mean survival based on histology, metastasis location, and treatment modality were extracted. Our findings revealed insights from 48 studies representing 136 BMEC patients, alongside data from 11 patients treated at our institution. While survival rates varied based on histology, treatment modalities, and metastasis location, we observed comparable survival times across different treatment approaches. Interestingly, our review suggests that causes of death were often unrelated to brain metastases, underscoring the importance of further research into early detection and prevention of primary esophageal cancer, as well as the development of improved treatment modalities for BMECs.
