March is Brain Tumour Awareness Month💚 With brain metastasis sadly affecting approximately 20% of all patients with cancer, we know how important it is to preserve quality of life when treating cancer that has spread to the brain. That’s why at GenesisCare in the UK, we deliver a world-class specialist neuro-oncology service and our centres in London and Oxford are centres of excellence for stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). This advanced ‘brain-sparing’ radiotherapy approach for brain tumours is recognised for its ability to preserve quality of life in people with brain metastases. To complement our SRS treatment, we offer fMRI scanning - a non-invasive MRI technique to better understand the possible outcomes of neurosurgery. As part of our patient-centred care approach, all our patients are discussed in our twice weekly national multi-disciplinary meeting which brings together UK’s leading experts, including Neuro-oncologists, Neuro-Surgeons, Neuro-radiologists, Medical Physicists and Neuro Clinical Nurse Specialists. This ensures tailored treatment plans and the best possible outcomes for all our patients. Our streamlined Rapid access SRS pathway allows appropriate patients to have SRS within just one week of the treatment decision. 👉 Find out more about our world-class neuro-oncology service we offer to UK patients here> https://bit.ly/3TIeUNw #braintumourawarenessmonth #designingbettercare

Our latest research on Brain Metastases from Esophageal Cancer is published in World Neurosurgery! Brain metastases from esophageal cancer (BMEC) pose significant challenges due to their rarity and aggressiveness, yet optimal treatment strategies remain unclear. Our study aimed to fill this gap by systematically reviewing existing literature and analyzing our institution's patient data to assess the impact of different treatment approaches on outcomes. We conducted a thorough literature review following PRISMA guidelines and performed a retrospective analysis of our institutional experience with BMEC. Data on mean survival based on histology, metastasis location, and treatment modality were extracted. Our findings revealed insights from 48 studies representing 136 BMEC patients, alongside data from 11 patients treated at our institution. While survival rates varied based on histology, treatment modalities, and metastasis location, we observed comparable survival times across different treatment approaches. Interestingly, our review suggests that causes of death were often unrelated to brain metastases, underscoring the importance of further research into early detection and prevention of primary esophageal cancer, as well as the development of improved treatment modalities for BMECs. 🚨 Choroid Plexus Carcinoma (CPC) 🚨 DON’T SCROLL PAST! It may sound complex, but it’s essential to know what this means: Choroid Plexus Carcinoma is a rare brain tumor that primarily affects children and can be diagnosed as early as infancy. This tumor develops in the brain's ventricles, which are fragile areas, making surgery particularly challenging. Surgery can be intricate and is not always successful, with some cases resulting in fatal outcomes. However, there is hope! 🌟 Dr. Mark Souweidane has pioneered a groundbreaking chemotherapy treatment allowing for targeted intra-arterial delivery of medication straight to the tumor in concentrated doses. This method helps shrink the tumor with minimal systemic toxicity, and it reduces blood flow, increasing the likelihood of successful surgical removal. 👉 To learn more about CPC and the clinical trials led by Dr. Souweidane, click the link below https://lnkd.in/eHXzQVtG #weillcornell #WCM #neurosurgery #curekidsbraintumors

This month, Keir Starmer committed that by March 2029, 92% of routine operations and appointments will occur within 18 weeks of referral on the NHS. Waiting can be a really difficult part of any patient journey, and this is especially true for cancer patients. Since Amethyst UK acquired The Queen Square Radiosurgery Centre, and strategic partnership with The University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, the number of patients treated have doubled in volume adding much needed capacity to the system. Amethyst Radiotherapy UK, is committed to working closely with the NHS to bring world-class radiotherapy for brain tumours to patients. We’re proud of how our team of talented and incredibly experienced Consultant Neurosurgeons here in the UK are continuing to treat a growing number of patients with our cutting-edge science and innovation.

For clinicians, what is your most preferred treatment for this case of severe bilateral hip pain that was associated with refractory cancer-induced bone loss and pathological acetabular fractures? Future Directions In Brain Tumor Research And Treatment - K M Bopanna Heterogeneity is probably the most defining factor in addressing the complex topic of brain tumours. Malignant brain tumours are diverse in their morphology and cellular pathways while being shielded by the blood-brain barrier, which renders effective systemic therapy a Herculean task with a grim prognosis. At present, most patients receive a generalized protocol of resective surgery followed by chemotherapy and radiation. The role of a tailored approach using precision medicine to treat brain tumours is the need of the hour to improve the outcomes of this devastating disease. It is estimated that approximately 65,000 non-malignant and 25,000 malignant brain tumours are diagnosed annually in the US, and this burden is likely increasing in keeping with the overall incidence of tumours worldwide. #worldbraintumourday #braintumorday #worldbraintumourday2024 #braintumour #braintumourresearch #drbopannakm

Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT) is a minimally invasive and cutting-edge therapy for brain abnormalities like brain tumors or epilepsy. Using heat produced by laser beams, neurosurgeons can burn away affected tissue, resulting in a procedure with minimal incisions and downtime post-surgery. Dr. Won Kim, Brain Tumor Neurosurgeon at UCLA, performs LITT procedures at UCLA. In this video, Dr. Kim speaks more about LITT, how it works, and what types of patients may be candidates for the procedure.
