2024 is the third year of the Breast Cancer Trials Clinical Fellowship Program. The Program is aimed at early career researchers, who have a high-level interest in clinical research and qualifications in the disciplines of medical oncology, pathology, psychology and other supportive care specialties, radiation oncology, radiology, or surgery. Dr Tivya Kulasegaran is working on a project that will establish tools for the early detection of invasive lobular carcinoma, aiming to improve clinical practice and patient outcomes. New hub to develop advanced cancer imaging techniques A major new research hub will focus on identifying and visualising cancer using optical, acoustic and photoacoustic imaging. The hub will enable better coordination of clinical research projects in imaging, as well as developing low-cost, portable devices to detect the earliest signs of cancer. Daniel Elson, Professor of Surgical Imaging at Imperial’s Department of Surgery and Cancer, explained: “Optical and acoustic imaging within cancer has shown a lot of promise, and there have been many interesting, but small, clinical trials of different devices. I am thrilled to announce the publication of our latest article titled "Application of Radiomics for Preoperative Prediction of Lymph Node Metastasis in Colorectal Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis" in the International Journal of Surgery, ranked 2/212 Surgery journals. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we evaluated the performance of radiomics models in predicting lymph node metastasis (LNM) in colorectal cancer patients. Our analysis revealed that radiomics models achieved a pooled area under the curve (AUC) of 0.814 (95% CI: 0.78–0.85), demonstrating robust diagnostic precision in predicting LNM. This idea started as a 10 minute conversation at the 2016 Society of Neurooncology meeting with Paul Brown. I am greatly appreciative of being able to work with my co-authors and research staff in developing the protocol and ultimately opening the study in 2019. I am grateful to our patients and families who were willing to enroll on our study. This study used advanced medical imaging with 18F-DOPA PET/MRI for improved visualization of residual disease after surgery with a short course (1-2 week) of proton beam therapy for older patients with glioblastoma given with concurrent/adjuvant temozolomide. Results were better than expected with median OS 13.1 months with MGMT methylated patients having a median of 21.8 months. Thanks to Eric Mellon for a well balanced editorial on our findings. With promising results, Mayo Clinic (PI: Dr William Breen) has opened SAGA (Stereotactic Accelerated radiotherapy in GlioblastomA) large randomized study comparing short course RT vs. 3-6 weeks of RT(SOC) incorporating 18F-DOPA PET/advanced MRI. Continuing the theme of Stream’s University collaborations and peer-reviewed publications, here we focus on how work done with University of Leeds CPNs can potentially improve cancer treatment and outcomes by further defining and enhancing tumour margins in fluorescence guided surgery. Work is still ongoing with further in vitro evaluation and animal model data planned to refine the approach that will ultimately lead to enhanced targeted surgery for colorectal cancer. It’s intended that the particles will be specially adapted to include gadolinium to enhance the MRI scanning potential and maximise bi-modal imaging capabilities. Biopsy of an unresectable pancreatic mass is typically done under endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) guidance. However in some cases EUS-guided biopsy is not feasible or fails. Interventional radiology can be helpful in such cases. The results of this study show that percutaneous CT-guided core needle biopsy of pancreatic mass can be effective and safe procedure with accuracy of 90% and no major complications.
