#grrf Special Day Update Global Records & Reference Organization 25 April- World Penguin Day World Penguin Day, on April 25 aims to raise awareness about these flightless birds to preserve their species so that future generations get to see these elegant and remarkable creatures. This day coincides with the annual northern migration of Adélie penguins, a pattern that is inherent and conserved across generations. There are eight species native to Antarctica. Most penguins are monogamous and have unique calls to assist them to find their mates in large groups. Most species lay up to two eggs in a season while the King and Emperor penguins lay only one. Alarmingly though, of the 18 known living species, 10 have been listed as endangered. Happy World Penguin Day! #grrf #penguin #worldpenguinday #climate #environment

A Eurasian eagle-owl family is settling in with us! 🦉   At #OranoMining, our activities don't stop when a mining site ends - quite the contrary! We redevelop and monitor these former mining sites to ensure that there is no health or environmental impact on site. They can then be transformed into recreational, industrial, or environmental zones.   At our Bellezane site in Haute-Vienne, we have chosen the environmental option:   🌳 Major biodiversity site in Haute-Vienne 🌼 Annual wildlife monitoring since 2014 🦔 8 major protected animal species recorded 🦉 4 Eurasian eagle-owls, including one pair and its two chicks   The Eurasian eagle-owl is an endangered species in France, critical locally. These endemic species include the pig-tailed snub-nosed langur, Mentawai gibbon, Mentawai langur, Pagai macaque, and Siberut macaque. Except for the last, the other four species are Critically Endangered or Endangered, as red-listed by the IUCN And with the #threat from #logging and clearing for oil palm and timber plantations growing, the survival of the forests of Mentawai and these primates is dimming. How many of these fascinating facts about African penguins did you know? Let’s face it, penguins are adorable! With their small stature and cute waddles, it’s hard not to love them – but they are also fascinating creatures who play an important role in their ecosystem. The African penguin can be found along the coast of South Africa and Namibia. Like other penguins, this aquatic bird is flightless. It’s easily distinguished by a pink patch of skin above the eyes and a black mask across the face. Here are 5 facts about the African Penguin: 1) African penguins are the only species of penguin found in Africa. 2) They are also known as “Jackass” penguins because their mating call sounds like a braying donkey.  3) According to researchers, African penguins can identify their partners by the unique pattern of spots on their chest.  4) These birds can grow to be between 60 and 70 cm tall.  5) African penguins are an endangered species, facing threats like oil spills, climate change and starvation due to overfishing. In a fascinating article we learn that a climate-disrupted ocean is pushing sharks, rays and other species to flee ever-hotter water in the tropics, only for them to be killed by increasingly intense upwells of cold water from the depths, a study has found. The paper, published in Nature Climate Change on Monday, found that shifts in ocean currents and pressure systems driven by climate breakdown were increasing the frequency and intensity of upwellings, which may in turn increase the vulnerability of migratory species such as bull sharks. One of the authors of the paper described the “eerie” aftermath of a mass die-off of more than 260 marine organisms from 81 species in a singular event of extreme cold upwelling off the coast of South Africa in 2021. +++ One of the things we learned in our community school class about the oceans is how specific and layered are the different currents. As a landscape has its valleys and slopes, frost pockets and exposed southerly facing slopes, so the oceans have layers upon layers of different currents that carry nutrients, along with widely varying temperatures. +++ The paper details how one particular shark changed its behaviour in an attempt to avoid the cold areas. It swam much closer to the surface than normal and moved outside its normal migration pattern. Many of the affected sea creatures’ carcasses washed up on the shore of South Africa, including the pup of a big manta ray that had been aborted by its traumatised mother. +++ Clearly, we are at the beginning of our understanding of how currents are changing, and how they impact the behaviour of the marine megafauna. Lake Baikal, nestled in Siberia, is the world’s largest freshwater lake by volume, holding an astonishing 22-23% of the Earth's fresh surface water. Formed over 25 million years ago, Lake Baikal is not only the deepest but also the oldest lake in the world.
