Student loan default rates show stark racial disparities: 50% of Black and 40% of Hispanic or Latino borrowers have defaulted, compared to 29% of White borrowers. “I don’t know what I would be doing right now if the library wasn’t here…” Pew examined capital investments from FY11-FY22 that impacted neighborhoods and facilities across the city, including Logan Library in Philadelphia. Because of that investment, the surrounding neighborhood has a well-maintained space to learn, convene, and utilize critical resources. Traditionally, libraries offer book and media borrowing, research assistance, computer and internet access, and a quiet space to learn. But they can also offer job hunting assistance, language learning resources, a place for kids to gather after school. At Logan Library in Philadelphia, they even offered sewing lessons and a fashion show. These resources are possible because of investments made by Philly’s local government, creating space for everybody in the neighborhood. A groundbreaking Schmidt Ocean Institute deep-sea expedition has revealed dozens of newly discovered species thriving on the seamounts of the Salas y Gómez and Nazca Ridges—a chain of underwater mountains off Chile’s coast. Nearly half the species that call these waters home are found nowhere else on earth—but 73% of these seamounts lie in international waters and are currently unprotected.  Thanks to the support of the Coral Reefs of the High Seas Coalition, this discovery shines a spotlight on the urgent need to protect these fragile ecosystems.
